Cold Air Box

Post by 90GTZHO »

So, im thinking about keeping my short ram intake for my new engine, and want to isolate the filter from the bay. Im curious if anyone else has attempted this and what you you have done to build a box or chamber for the filter to sit in to not suck in hot engine air?

I was also thinking about making an air tunnel that secured to the hood somehow with a hood scoop to "shove" cool, outside air in. Anyone have any pics or ideas, or am i beating a dead horse here?

Best to have the air used coming down from the cowl. Aerodynamics often illustrate air force down by the wipers.

Avoiding hydro lock is the main thing with that. You don't get that much rain, but still.
Heat shielding the short ram does help by the way.

It's very hard to heat shield in these cars... hell my filter is in my wheel well and it will still exceed 100* when I'm sitting in traffic... It get's air blown through the radiator.

Late 80's and early 90's Z24's had this - basically a layered hood and would draw air from the cowl area. Bad side to that is the hood being hot from the sun and getting warm air anyway. My "cold" air is drawn from right behind the left turn signal in that nice empty area between the bumper and left front tire. Make sure you have all of the panels in place for the Z bumper or it could get fairly wet.

Improve the 80's concept/design by applying current times thermal coatings and heat barrier shielding deflectors. :D

I thought about making a Z24 hood cowling work on my car but two things: 1) Ive never done fiberglass work before, 2) i dont think the double cowl from a cavy will look right on a beretta. Living in Arizona, i see extreme heat all the time, but if i can keep the intake air as close to ambient as possible, ill be happy :-)

Anyone have any design ideas by chance?

aside from plumbing it in to the cabin and sucking in air conditioning, the fenderwell spot might be your best option.

Sure helped on my Cavy, those aluminum tubes do some major heat soaking. The filter is by the battery and close to the hole in the fender where stock intake was though. Oops did it again.....by heat shielding I was talking about the HP Armor heat wrap. The only heat soak is in the filter(just speaking of the intake tube its self). The car also has an ABS intake manifold which is a major factor.
Did help on the CAI that the Beretta has to and it is just on what's in the engine compartment. To me it's the best bang for the buck. Need to get some temps while driving around town one of these hot days.

If you use ABS tubing it recovers from heat soak in just a few minutes of driving.

Just need to wrap the low pressure lines around the intake tube in a coil, then cover it. When the AC is on then there would be a power recovery of sorts(LOL).

I've kept the air filter behind the (steel) bumper, front of the radiator for 10 years on both of my cars now without issues.

Lost a great link. There was a guy that did real world testing on WAI's and CAI's with/without heat wrap on a J2000(I think). The best was wrap with a CAI, but it was still very helpful to use it on a WAI. That is why the Cavy got it and the GF Cavy.

Only thing I have on the box is this:
