That's why I'm looking to replace it. It might be fine with the over 4.0L version, but I'm not about to go down that route again.

Both my cars are super-loud, I could really use one of these more silent mufflers :D But without losing the V6 sound that is quite rare up here.

..... it's a glasspack with a flow-actuated butterfly valve in a chambered muffler case. that would be why it will do the cackle on decel/overrun.

i like the cackle, so i've never tried to get rid of it on mine, but i don't know if it is possible to do using only a glasspack-style muffler. i think you would need to have a chambered muffler(which will have a dramatic effect on tone at all times) or perhaps a helmholtz resonator(which shouldn't have the same problem, IIRC).

woody90gtz wrote:Yeah. And for the most part it works...only in certain circumstances does it flutter. Dynomax recommends one muffler for under 4.0L or dual exhaust, and a different for over 4.0L and single exhaust. I'm thinking the 3.4 with headers and 2.5 pipe may just breathe too well for the "under 4.0" version that I have.

The dynomax mufflers are good and fairly cheap... I have them on my chevelle with true dual exhaust... it has a nice mellow tone but not too loud on the road.....

I had a straight through Borla XR1 glasspack-style and that thing was crazy loud. It really didn't cackle at all with my auto, but the headers and 5spd made it do it a lot.

I still think as most say online the "cackle" is caused by your decel enrichment tuning you have or don't have for that matter. My Legacy goes into immediate injector shut off as soon as your coasting and that has no cackle at all, similarly with the Beretta, but that is also an auto so it's sometime will coast and rpm's will drop down and not engine brake. Other times that it does engine brake you can hear the cackle... But with the cam setup I have now it's different than before.

I miss the sound of this muffler...

What setup was that Jon? I like the v6 burble but not the fart crackle & pop. Was that in L letting the engine brake?

Mine have deceleration enleanment and deceleration fuel cut off. I turned it off with my truck to try it out and I still get the crackle.

LOL that was a funny police stop.

That was the Camaro 80 Series Flowmaster and yeah it was in L engine braking...

I would think with the Decel fuel cut shut off it would crackle more, All I know is in the subie my wideband will read AIR as soon as I let off the gas and start decel.

"Air" as in no fuel at all? Mine pegs lean which would be the same thing.

Mine crackles in DFCO and in the couple seconds leading up to it. I turned it off just to see what would happen and there was no change. Part of that problem with my truck is likely the wet intake...when closing the throttle the vacuum sucks all the fuel off the runner walls and it actually swings rich before it goes lean on decel.

I would have been more likely to try the Dynomax vt if it was tunable. Either a trap door to let you change spring rate or an external screw adjustment would have been cool.

Brad I can't tell from this pic, but is the muffler narrow enough to clear the shock, or is the case just short enough that you have pipe next to the shock and the muffler after? My HUGE Quietflow didn't quite fit. And did it neck down inside to like 2" or less on that perforated pipe inside? Makes me wonder what it actually flows.

The case is short enough that it fits behind the shock by about 3". And I don't recall if it necks down on the inside or not. To be honest I was far more concerned with decibels than hp on this car although it seams like it outflows stock substantially.
I would say it easily flows more than enough for my stock 3400. The exhaust just rolls off the tips and drifts straight up at idle unlike my high strung Quad which shoots smoke rings in the winter.
