Starting problem

Post by DownSouth »

My car has an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes it will fire right up when I turn the key and sometimes all I get is the classic "click." Occasionally I only get a single "click," then the car starts right up on the second attempt. Other times it takes multiple attempt to fire up. I replaced the battery and starter and the problem still occurs. The connections at the battery and starter appear to be solid and corrosion free. Where else should I check?

Thanks

Bad connection in the wiring to the starter possibly. Can't hurt to check, may also want to make sure the battery terminals are tight.

hah Beat me to it but yeah ^^

Starter relay could be going bad too. Although, I can't remember if our cars still had a relay inline to the starter solenoid... I can't remember.

The connections at the battery and starter appear to be solid and corrosion free. Are there other points in the wiring that should be checked?

the point between the starter solenoid and the starter. lol

other than the starter, as long as you hear a 'click', that tells you that the starter has 'been told' to start... if you dont have enough battery voltage it could click as well, but you already stated that it is intermittent.

if the starter is a wrecking yard jobby (as i commonly get as well), that could be the issue... sometimes they just dont care... imagine most of the guys who work there.

if it's new, get another under warranty.

A couple things to check.
Maybe the switch on the steering column is out of adjustment. Maybe it's just barely making contact.

You could also check if the engine has a good ground. I don't know offhand if there is a grounding strap but you could
use a jumper cable from negative battery to the engine and see if that helps the problem.

New problem. My car shut off while driving it the other day. The engine just stopped running. I dropped it into neutral turned the key,...and it started. Got home, turned the car off and then tried to restart it and all it will do is turn over. It will not fire up. I changed the fuel filter and I also hear the fuel pump start when I turn the ignition key on. I also have pressure at the schrader valve.

Do you think this is a control module or computer problem? Crank sensor?

Thanks

It will not run. The engine does not fire up. It just turns over and over.

Mine started having a shity idle off and on and dying just like yours. then all together would crank but not fire. I tested spark, fuel psi, injectors, had new coolant temp sensor last year and o2, replaced fuel pump, replaced crank sensor, cleaned idle air control valve. even hooked up a snap on scanner. Everything seemed normal. Then my uncle had a idle air control valve laying around. So I put the new one in, car fired right up took it out for a test drive, idle was fine, no more surging, dying. Let the car get to temp and shut it off then re started it, it started right up which it wouldnt before. This seemed to fix mine. Id give it a try a BWD one is only 30$

edit also mine would just crank and not start but if I hit the pedal just slightly it would. check for spark
