phantom stalling

phantom stalling

Chevy beretta 2.8 auto. My car has started idling very odd. It goes from 1000 to 600 rpm constanly once warm. While its doing this the oil pressure rises and falls with the idle. When it goes up to oil pressure maxes out. What could be causing this?

Check for vacuum leaks... Oil pressure will vary with RPM since the pump is driven by the speed of the engine. If you had a constant idle and the oil pressure was varying then you could consider that a problem but with the idle bouncing then that is just what it will do.

By surging i mean the needle points past 80 on the gauge. I hope this isnt normal for these cars. It did rise and fall a littoe when i bought it but never like this.

As stated you need to look beyond that issue until you get the idle level... with the idle going between 600 and 1000 you are getting a false reading. Or you can just change your pressure sensor to see if the reading changes. These analog gauges are more for a reference value and not to be used for an accurate measurement, it's just to let you know there is pressure, it doesn't mean its above 80PSI necessarily.

Ok. That makes sense. Ill look into the vacuum line issue today after work. I already have the sensor so ill change that. Hopefully it solves the issue

If you don't find anything try plugging the lines that go to the vapor canistor. If you find that to be the problem I have a GM vapor canistor that is brand new(for a 90 though).

Probably should update. I took apart and cleaned all of my vacuum lines with deep creep and she runs a whole lot better now
