1990 Beretta GTZ 2.3 quad four/ tranny help!

Post by Geoff »

Hi, new to the forums...I have a really confusing problem to ask about.

I bought a 1990 GTZ with quad four. I have gone through 5 shift selector gear cables(shift cables) in 2 months....I have no clue why this is happening. No, I am not fast and furious drivingf, I am seriously babying my driving style. it's still binding right by the gear shift. I have put this cable in so many times, I dont even need to jack the vehicle anymore.

So my VIN# is 1G1LZ14A4LY138151

Now, when I went to the tranny shop back home (Big Rapids Michigan), they ran the chevy dealers computer system to find out what kind of cable I needed...they said it was an izuzu...part number 16654 on advanceautoparts.com

now, that is the cable I have continuously put back into the car when breaking.

So people have told me I have an izuzu tranny because of the last 6 numbers in my Vin code...138151, if that number is 500001 and up it's a getrag, if lower, its izuzu...since mine is lower, its izuzu

BUT,

If it really is an izuzu would it keep breaking? my question is I have NO idea if this car's tranny was swapped out by the previous owners, I think I am the third owner, engines been rebuilt 3 times now.

I dont want to sell it, but school is coming up in less than 4 weeks and I have to have a drivable car....

can someone tell me HOW I can tell what kind of tranny this is, other possible causes of the cable constantly binding and how much a used tranny would cost, or how much to rebuild mine or what I can do to fix this.

I am becoming extremely depressed about this, I have no clue what to do anymore.

This site http://www.drivetrain.com/ shows that beretta's of my year and engine type have the Muncie 282 (MG2) tranny when you search for transmissions and click the *find the tranny that fits your vehicle link*

but I dont see any other shift selectory cables I can buy, and when I call autozone/ Napa and advance, they only carry the part #'d 16654 motormite cable that keeps binding. what a, I supposed to do?

any help at all would be extremely helpful!

I've had this car for 2 months and it's killing me that I'd had this bad of a problem.

AFAIK there are NO V-6 Quad4 5-speeds with Isuzus.

Need to find a Getrag cable and see if it is what you are looking for.  I'm not sure if there is a difference.  I would assume that there is.

Hi, the getrag cable is on there, it is the thicker, longer cable that allows the car to go into 1st or 2nd, 3rd or 4th, 5th and reverse, the cable for ME that isnt working and binding all the time is part # 16655 (i made a mistake above) is the thinner black cable that allows you to shift from 1st and 2nd over and get into 3rd and 4th, the shift lever cable opposed to the shift selector cable that is on there, I know that because I ahd bought a getrag one thinking I was installing the wrong one and I ended up trying to install another getrag cable, ex. two shift selector cables without any shift lever cables.

it didnt work, the only thing else I can think of is to check the engine/tranny mounts to see if something is out of whack and causing the cables to bind and not work. I will check tomorrow or else I am out of luck and am stuck.

I didn't think any 90 GTZs were Isuzu trannys.  I know mine is a Getrag, purchased the car new May 5, 1990.
