What better place to ask a Quad Question. lol
I have a 90 GTZ that started out with a bone motor (S.O.H.C. Quad) I purchased a 16v Quad VIN A from a 94 Cutlass the Yard (Horners Auto) said.
My question is whats the difference between the 90 HO Quad and the 94 16v Quad?
Should I change the cams to match HO?
Any specs that can be offered on this would be appreciated. BTW I am also looking to Build the crap outta this Quad this winter.
This was the "Boner" motor.
I will hafta chrge the batteries on the camera to get the pic of the 16v.

Whats the differences
The '90 HO and '94 16v are BOTH HO's. There were minor block differences as pertains to some tapped bolt holes. Minor HP number decrease too. Down to 180 HP from 190 HP in '90. Now in '95 they added a balance shaft to it and it dropped to 150 HP.
As to the SOHC it never belonged in that car. As I stated before someone dropped it in there.
The cams in the '94 16v (which as I stated IS the HO) are the right ones already.
Now if you're asking the diff between the SOHC that was in there and the DOHC HO, that's a diff story. Base HP line of about 120 HP vs 190 HP in the HO.

HP numbers in 90 were 180 not 190 and they only lost 5 hp taking it to 175.
That being said, there is a difference in the heads and the motor mounts. The 90 would have an 086 casting which, some say, is the best flowing head on a HO DOHC. Also the 94 had a crank balancer where the 90 didnt, that's where the 5 hp would come from which is the higher weight on rotating mass. You are better off looking to get a 94 and put an 086 head on it.

If you're referring to the balance shaft John, that was added in '90 to get rid of some of the engine bay noise and smooth the engine.
As to the '90 HP is a subject of some debate. Between 185 and 190 is what most say, but GM IS known for undercutting their HP numbers.
As to picking up that "lost" HP, you can do a few very simple things to gain some back.
Cold Air Intake
Under Drive Pulley
If you get ambitious you could upgrade the HO to W41 specs. Which means getting a W41 set of cams out of a 442 or Achieva SCX and slapping them in an 086 head (which John is right, IS the preferrable head for Quad HO's) and putting them in your engine. You could also get Racin17 on the Quad4Forums.com to burn you a 442 chip to raise your rev limiter and change your air/fuel maps a bit. Of course opening up the exhaust with a high flow Cat and Muffler are always good ideas. Oh, and be sure you have the HO intake and exhaust manifolds, and NOT the SOHC as they don't flow as well.
Now let me ask you this? Did you check to be sure the IDI cover wasn't just switched and you truly have a SOHC? I'm sure it's what you have, just asking.
BTW, IF that engine came out of a Cutlass AND it's a Vin A odds are good it COULD be the W41. If it is the IDI cover on top of the motor will say Oldsmobile W41. If it does, leave the engine alone. You're set, more than likely. But my understanding is the Olds Cutlass 442 was only produced for 2 years ('90 and '91) and I don't recall hearing of the Quad 4 HO being put in any other Cutlass. Are you sure you didn't get a Vin D LGO Quad? LGO is the mid shelf between the SOHC and the HO. It's a DOHC with 150 HP.

This is the new used engine.
She needs alotta tlc but I'll git r' done!
I will check the quad4forums out too thx for that.

Whats the differences
Sorry, I mis spoke above. I meant to say LD2 is the low output version of the Quad 4 DOHC. The LGO is the high output version.
Now as for your "new" engine, that IDI cover is for an LD2 (LO Quad). I would say since that engine SUPPOSEDLY came out of a '94 Cutlass you def got screwed by the yard. It's a low output version of the Quad. Plus I did some checking of my facts. You COULDN'T get an HO Quad in a Cutlass except for '90-'91. So yea, either the yard screwed up the year or lied. NO Vin A Cutlass above '91.
Here's a pic of both a HO Quad and a W41 HO Quad, just so you know what to look for. Oh, and HO Quads came in:
'90-'93 Beretta GTZ's
'90-'91 Cutlass 442's
'94 Beretta Z26's
'92-'93 Achieva SCX and also optional on the '92-'94 Achieva SC
Mid-'89-'94 Grand Am
You could also get the Quad in the Grand Prix, though I'm not sure if it was the HO or not.
There's a list of cars you could get your HO from. OR you could convert the LO you have now by swapping the cams. And if you want the head to an 086 casting number.

Yea, that's a good link but just remember not ALL the cars listed with a Quad available were HO's. Several were LO or SOHC.

my pops has old car and driver mags goin back to the late 80's i went lookin around to do some history work, only the w41s had the 190hp q4, the lgo quads that the berettas had (in 90-92 possibly 93) had 180hp and any beretta historian will tell you the same, thats the reason why you see people swap w41 cams in their lgo q4 ho's

Ok the 1 I blew the lower end in is a 94 DOHC (Stamped 94 on block) the replacement they gave me is a 90 HO DOHC (stamped 90 in block).
I still have the 94.
Should I keep it? Better lower end? W41 heads?
If I understand correctly...
Take the 90 heads and attach them to the 94 block?

Yea, you'll have to take the '94 head, timing cover, cams, add a dual cam timing chain , new belts (timing and serpentine),etc. Basically just a top end swap to the '94 block. If the '94 isn't a HO you'll want to swap the intake/exhaust manifolds too as they're better flowing. And you'll need an HO chip for redline and fuel/air maps. GL.
