3.1L code readings and more?

Post by 1crazedmind »

Greetings; I'm new here, but I've been to these pages and looked around. Very nice and very helpful. I am a proud owner of a 91' Chevy BerettaGT 3.1L auto. But lately i've had problems and issues. Could use some help any advice could help. My GT started to stumble on acceleration so I scanned for codes map an tps came up changed them out and did the fuel pump and filter as well, all new parts. but now starts but when shifted into D it stalls R works fine. Ran a scan and map and tps came on again. Any similer issues before out there? Also got new injectors to replace on my day off. Thanks for you time.    crazed

replace the MAP sensor........ you will get codes for a MAP and TPS if the map is bad. If it's bad it will pretty much just kill the car like someone pulled the plug.

Also does it do it when it's warm or cold? warm could be your TCC solenoid going bad. Just take the airbox off and look on the top-front of the trans for a blue plug. Unplug it. Voila... problem solved.LOL

Spoken from too many times of having to fix those problems.

Start with testing the injectors before replacing them. Iirc, they should ohm out between 2.5 and 2.9. Anything less or more and they're bad. Also clean them. As to the MAP sensor , it doesn't always throw a code, but John is correct. You would be fairly certain if it was out or going out by the car's behavior. GL.

***EDIT***

Oh, snap. I just noticed you're only an hour away from me. I'm in Milan.

The maps and tps are new just went in and the same #'s showed up, I just hope I don't have a short or some leak some where. I'm ready to pull the engine and inspect the whole block, and clean it up. Bought the car from a little car lot in Gallup NM about 5yrs. ago and ran odd. So i got a heck of a deal replaced all sensors. Still ran weird so I pulled the MEM-CAL chip pulled it a part and it was fried.Found a junkyard part matched all #s needed and did the trick. I've checked the chip again but its fine. But I,ll buy another map sensor and give it a try. The blue plug too. Thanks guys. Work allnight sleep allday and not much time to play!!!     crazed

Btw, clear your codes and then run another scan. This way you're starting fresh. And , yes, unplug the blue plug on the front side of the trans and see if that cures the issue. GL.

Did you check your IAC (Idle air control valve)?  3.1's are famous (along with 3.4's, 3.8's, etc) for IAC build up and can cause big problems.  If it is stumbling on you off the line, pull the valve out and check it for carbon build up.  I have seen IAC's kick all kinds of codes up in the system, TPS being one of them.  If it's dirty, soak it in carb cleaner for half an hour and put it back in.  Even if its not the problem, its worth checking out.
