Garbage Trucks = Snow Plows

Post by dhenderz »

Saw a first today. Been in NYC all week on biz. In fact I am presently cruising at 35,000ft headed home (internet in the air is awesome). Anyway, for those who didn't track the news, NYC got hit with nearly 18" of snow last night. I was in Times Squares and it was incredible. Anyway, guess what they use for snow plows? Garbage trucks. They repurpose them with chains on the wheels and snow blades on the front. Strange sight for sure!

Anyway, glad to be finally on a plane headed home. Most flights into/out of the city were cancelled. Gotta get home - have to catch a flight to Vegas in about 16hrs!

They do this in Chicago. Which is why the streets are usually clear in the event of significant snow fall.

After the streets are plowed they bring in front end loaders and dump trucks and take all the snow away so people can park again

Here's another first I saw yesterday, but forgot to mention. At the airport they had a piece of equipment that had the appearance of a large dump truck. After they had gathered all of the snow off the runways into a gigantic mound, they used front end loaders to dump the snow into the top of the dump truck looking piece of equipment. Turns out the equipment was a huge heater. They would dump snow into the top and woosh, phase conversion and with each scoop into the top out came a bucket of water from the bottom. Quite interesting.

Mostly you meet friends when traveling by accident, like by sitting next to them on the train, or in a restaurant, or in a holding cell.

I got 13" yesterday, and 4" the day before that... On top of the 18" from the last storm... so yeah my yard is quite deep.
