My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
Off topic....
bought a rc nitro helicopter back in the fall and pulled it apart and found the bearings in the engine all gunked up so i finally tracked some down a couple weeks ago and got them in the mail today so i been quit busy today trying to get it back together and remembering where everything goes lol.
Engine is a Enya 80 X. 2 stroke nitro. haven't had it fired up yet but i got the bearings put in and assembled today it has wicked compression, turning it by hand when it kicks back it hurts your hand a little so it should be a strong engine, it had very little wear inside so im guessing it hasn't been run alot.
I never flown a heli before, i have always wanted one since i was a kid, i have had many nitro rc cars and trucks but never a heli or plane. Should be interesting to fly, there is 24 different buttons/switches on the controller and i don't know what any of them do LOL. Still need to find some blades for it and get some fuel and fire this baby up, i just want to hear it run, ill go out and fire it up every day just to listen to it lol.
The heli is a HiRobo that's all i know about it, hoping maybe someone here knows something about them and might have some helpful info.
Its aprox 57 inches long, hard to fit it into the back seat of the beretta.
photo's

the cockpit has some pretty good detail the people have faces that look realistic and the visors on their helmets can be up or down

Re: My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
I would suggest you go get a toy micro helicopter (the $30 ones) and practice with it, and when you master that, get a collective pitch heli in the $100-200 range. Once you master that, you MIGHT be able to fly that monster you got there. If you attempt to learn on this thing, you WILL destroy it.

well i think i want to hold onto it for now and finish putting it back together and get the blades for it.
I was told from a hobbie shop before if i wanted a gas powered heli to buy a electric one first to learn on. i got a good deal on this one i couldnt pass it up. and the only reason i replaced the bearings was because they were gunked up with old oil from sitting prob for years. there is no scoring at all on the cylinder or piston, it should run good once i get everything back together.
Whats so hard about flying them ? other then theres 24 different buttons on the controller lol the hardest part i herd was getting them off the ground.
I think if i was to fly it that it may look something like this but not on purpose LOL, this is just insane.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bFLSaeo ... re=related

I guess the point Rodney is trying to make is, Would you jump in the cockpit of a real helicopter and attempt to fly it without ever trying on a smaller simulator and learning how it operates?
I have a battery type one and its not easy to control... I can't imagine the skill needed to control something that you can change the tilt of the blades and is moving fast enough to act like a real helicopter as well as chop your ass in half if you get hit with it.

i got one of the little battery ones for Christmas and it's a handful i can't image crashing something that size and expensive into the ground.
practice on a little one first then fly the nice expensive one.

Almost had it all back together until i went to put the whole unit back into the body and the muffler is on the wrong side LOL, had the 2 ends on the crankcase opposite then they should have been. they go on either way and wouldnt effect how it runs but it does effect how the exhaust is on the body LOL.
Not really having fun at this point because you have to take the side plate off the main mechanical part to get the engine in and out and theres like 30 screws and has to come apart and back together in a certain order but at least im getting the hang of stripping it down and putting it back together now.
And i very well may buy a cheap electric one to learn on before trying to fly this thing. it has 4 blades on the gyro and i just noticed the gyro operates the blades opposite each other at the same time, then you flip a switch on the controller and it tilts them differently.. could be interesting to fly lol.
Also i think my remote for it can plug into my computer if i get a cable for it and then fly on a simulator to learn the controls this will be a good thing to use haha.
Edit. found a document on my controller and the connector on the back is not for hooking it to a pc but to another controller for trainer.

Re: My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
does anyone know anything about Futaba remote controls ?
I see on ebay there is alot of cords to USB to plug into the pc for training on a simulator but none of which seem to list my controller model i know its older the date is 1992 on it and it does have a trainer port but in the manual it says its to connect to another controller doesnt say anything about being compatible with PC.
Wondering if with the cord to USB if it might just work on the pc even though the manual says nothing about this..
This is the controller i have, http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/7uaf-7uap-manual.pdf
And its the PRO version.
Also does anyone here know a little about helicopters.. the rear rudder blades or whatever you call them, i think they are for steering it.... without the cable hooked to the servo i can move them back and forth so they switch air flow from 1 direction to the other, but when hooked to the servo it stays in 1 direction and will only come back to almost the middle it will not go the other way to change direction.... the servo seems it would need a different connector end on it to reach far enough to make it go the other way....
Im not sure if its only supposed to move a little or should it be able to move enough to change direction ?

Re: My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
The rear rudder is for stabilization.... without that the helicopter would try to spin in the direction the top prop is going... They just vary the amount of air they move to rotate the whole body of the chopper when you are hovering. If you made the rear fins blow air in the opposite direction then the chopper would go into an instant death spin since there is always the same force being applied by the top prop, so you need at least the equal counteraction to keep it stable... but yes can lessen that to make it go that direction or increase the push to go the other direction.
I will say it agian... Get a beginners book and a few small electric ones first.

Re: My toy / Nitro rc helicopter
Ok that makes sense then, i wasnt sure if it should be able to go both directions or just 1 way.
I will for sure be doing lots of reading on how to fly the darn thing maybe ill try to pick up a cheap electric but i dont want to spend alot into it. an electric one will cost me more then i have into the nitro one. i got a wicked deal on it, i could part it out and make a ton, the bell gear without the clutch is 40 bucks on ebay and theres hundreds of parts on this thing, i know i can sell the engine for double what i paid for the whole thing, so if i do crash it i wont be out anything.
Id really like to grab a cable for my controller and see if it will work on the pc i think that would be great to learn the controls.
I really want to fire it up just to hear it run, i have had it since last year and never herd it run yet. its almost back together now getting really close, i have to buy a rod for my drill to start it and need to get some fuel.
Im a fast learner and i have had many other nitro rc's just not a helicopter before, so i know how to fix them and tune them and all that. i think i will catch on quick on how to fly it, but im sure its not easy.
