1990 Indy Pace Car Shocks

I assume they are the same as for the GT? Any trick to installing new ones, can this be done at home?

All shocks can be and should be done at home. As for the same stock I'm not sure(thinking they may have had GM Performance shocks and struts). Aftermarket will be the same. It is a good idea to change the mounts also.

Do I need a spring compressor to do them or is it a unbolt and replace with new?

With the struts, you do need a compressor.

Not on the shocks. The only things you need are some jackstands and a jack. The jackstands are for holding up the body and you use the jack again to take the tension off of the shocks by jacking up the axle. If you don't do that it will be hard to turn the nuts on the mounts(or the one bolt on the center of the shock). It's a good idea to change the mounts even if they look good(you don't know how long they have been on there). Though it does sound like they may be bad. The only other things that can go bad are the axle bushings or the sway bar bushings. Really it's rare that the sway bar bushings go bad. They are under the axle near the body. Check them and the axle bushings. Axle is a loose term for these cars, but you know what I'm talking about.

It is much more easy to change the mounts and the shocks at the same time. That way you only have to take the nuts off the mount and the shock and the mount will come out at the sametime. I have the torque specs if you need them.

Sounds over my head, prob pay my shop eventually. The car was bottoming out on the exh pies and heat shield at the gas tank. I though maybe the shocks/struts needed attn but they seem ok with a push on each corner. Well this car has not cat. When they took that out the messed with the pipe at the heat shield and even have the muffler turna a little. So the that has the pipe at the bend at the tank hanging low and the heat shield is just bouncing around. I think when I have the cat put back in I will have that piping set better and will lose the pipe scraping on bumps like speed bumps, etc. It really does not hear much but once to many for me.

Nah you can do it. Tim get yourself a Chilton's manual it's not the best, but will help you out alot. It's a shame that the old one is hard to find, it was more for the older cars. The easy one to get is for the newer cars #28480. The older one is #8254 and was done before Haynes bought them out so it's better. It's no longer in print.
The new one will cover most of what you need or are asking.

KYB Gas-A-Just. KG4536 - $36.79 each @ RockAuto.

That's the best option that is a direct replacement shock for the back.

rears are yes quite a bit firmer than the OE option of Monroe for example... The fronts are GR2's which yes are a bit more firm than OE but not really drastic, they will accept and hold up to a lowering spring where a OE replacment one would not.
