1990 Beretta GTZ - timing chain + water pump

Post by tvc3-gtz »

Hello, I am looking for links to a cheap place where I can buy a dependable timing chain set for my 1990 GTZ. I have heard that the parts can run me some money, but I want to find the cheapest and most effective solution to my problem so I can get my car back as soon as possible.. The parts I need are the timing chain, the guide(s), and of course a new water pump.. I figured I'd go with the original sprocket design for the car because its cheaper than changing all the pulleys and such, unless I am wrong. I am desperately in need of answers, and want my car fixed as soon as possible so please help me with information and web site links guys... thanks a lot :)

I have a set of guides available. Good luck getting them elsewhere. PM me if interested. Link you posted for eBay is for a single row chain.

You must have missed the thread where I got told the "2nd Revision" chain that is available on rock auto is not sufficent... Rock auto does not have any guides available for the old style double roller chain, Granted Clevite has a double row chain on rock auto, but they only have the other parts for the newer silent chain style which keeps getting called a "single row chain", which I think is a bit of a false description since it can be confused with single row roller chains.

I'm starting to wonder... has anyone actually measured the double row chain to see if it is wider than the newer style? and that the guides will not be wide enough? They may have eliminated the other guides because the 2nd revision is wide enough for both chains... Just a thought. Unless the entire design of the guide changed.

The new guides are 23mm wide... How wide is a double roller chain?

It's definitely wider. I don't have an exact measurement.

Sigh, and I didn't say it wasn't sufficient. You cannot use the single row chain in a double row timing housing, or vice versa. You will never ever find the water pump driver gear or bearing, and its pressed into the housing. Beyond that physical limitation, I have a preference.

Preference maybe but you did say it was not sufficient, "in your opinion"... Thats all I was saying, I was told its not sufficent... and YES I know he would need a new timing cover setup to go to the 2nd design. He lives very close to Linders JY in my area and I can't see finding that as and issue, but maybe I'm wrong. I ripped apart at least two quad cars 96+ to get trans parts from one and brake parts from the other.

You also stated it was a single roller.

I'm simply trying to clear up any confusion about it and open the opportunity for mixing and matching parts to make crap work since as you've clearly stated, finding NEW double roller chain guides are near impossible now.

If he wants to change there is the whole part he needs... the just get the 2nd design chain KIT, and gasket kit, and water pump. DONE. But thats just my opinion and direction I would go but I've never worked on or owned a quad.

Yes I did say that, in my opinion, but I don't and have never expected anyone to listen to my opinion. Thank you for clarifying the roller issue, I still don't think there is any reason to switch. (parts can always be found, with enough digging, that's half of why we are here isn't it? :D ) I also said, which you didn't quote, that I felt that going from single to double wasnt any kind of *upgrade*.

I still have sets of double row guides from my GM dealer closing bulk purchase. They actually had lots of Quad stuff.

No I didn't quote that because it gives a false impression that the 2nd design chain is literally only half of the original design which is not true. They are two completely different technology's in chain type so quoting width and row's is completely an unfair comparison. Hence my point of wanting to clear the air on how its designed.

You are wrong. I just looked. RockAuto has ALL the double roller components (TC, Guides, Tensioner, and Cam gears as well as idler pulley bearing (unnecessary in most cases) and the crank sprocket). I looked under a '90 GTZ. They are all Cloyes, Clevite , and Sealed Power parts. They are the correct components. And they are not expensive.

Ok when I looked they all stated 2nd design... Might want to post up a picture showing me since I guess I'm blind and chad also doesn't know what he is talking about. Chains I agree both are listed but only the 2nd design has a full kit.
