Yeah, I know about the flaking problem. Sad to say, it wasn't just GM that had that issue. Problem was actually in the primer not staying bonded between the paint and the body. My 93 dodge caravan had it REAL bad. Still, I have yet to have an issue with it on the Z, even from the start. My paint has never flaked, but the spoiler did fade a bit before we redid it. So in my case I'm not really worried about it. The vehicles that had to deal with that most were from the 80-early 90 era.

Almost like you used a sealer and let it dry out before you painted, offers no protection and the rust comes though. this will be the first and last car i ever buy with the issue, until I have my own garage to do this kinda work in.

ecoat, not powder coat. It doesn't come off. Unless you sand it.

Problem with sanding down the bare metal on these cars is that the original ecoat helps protect the zinc coating on the surface of the steel, which itself keeps the rust at bay. You have removed most of that protection.


At least you used a good epoxy sealer instead of just a surfacer, and you used plenty of it, lol.

hard to get just the shitty old paint off without rubbing some of the "ecoat" what is it?

They make chemicals for that. Messy, but effective. If chipped, water will get under the coat primer and bubble it and rust obviously.

It's just primer that's electrically applied then baked.

My car was pulled down to bare metal, but obviously my cousin did the proper sealers and primers to prevent any rust under the paint. My 96 was flaking paint in quite a few areas.

My '91 Quad was a bloody mess! At the coin wash I felt like I should sweep up with all the paint coming off the damn thing.

They took it to bare metal to ensure all the crap was gone then sealed and primered it properly. ALOT of hours of disassembly, sanding and prep. But the end result is certainly worth the time and expense on a 100% rust free car.

Now if I could just keep the damn bugs off it,,,LOL!

Yeah don't even get me started about that... You need to use damn buffing compound to get some off... Its annoying.

I didnt take mine to bare metal and I had no problems with the flake syndrome.

IIRC white was the most prone to that paint flake. Maybe it was because there were a lot of white cars.

Well its been a while since there was an update on this car, I have put WAY too many hours in on it but I guess there could be worse hobbies like smoking crack or something. The paint job went rather terrible last year, I had the compressor blow a ring on the piston spraying compressor oil all over my fresh paint causing a MASSIVE fish eye problem. So the car was wet sanded and sprayed again. This being only the second complete car I have painted with 0% knowledge in a dirty old garage with three 60 watt light bulbs, at least its white. I think there is about 20 coats of paint/primer that have been applied although most has been sanded off. I cleaned off all the scale on the floor and coated it with "spring green" tremclad. Spent hours tracking down all the water leaks, cleaned and seam sealed all the cracks. This is the first beretta that I have owned that doesn't leak inside! The headliner is about 40% fiber glass to make it one piece again. Replaced sunroof with one that I have had stored for years! Looks a lot better than the tired blue interior from Texas!

I was trying to figure out how many berettas junkyards parts trips have been made to complete this I just lost track. I think the most difficult part to find was the un-cracked front base lip (thanks 3100-mod for that). Two trips to Ontario (about 1000km) for GTZ door panels, seats, and a brand new GM dash stored since 1994 (best price $50). A few friends that helped me sand it originally.

Soon it will done only a few screws left!
