[SOLVED] Diagnostic tool & tuner combo, sugestions?

Post by zBusterCB87 »

Hi all,

I've been looking at the tech 2 diagnostic system for use with our GM vehicles, we own several different cars.
I've been trying to look into what I can change in my cars computer, maybe I can tune the computer with it and control sensor readings and such?

I know they are slowly converting from OBD2 to CAN, and an adapter would allow the tech 2 to still work then...

I also see HP tuner products, and I read you need a license or so for each vehicle?

I'm having trouble finding other options, my Beretta is not the only car I'd like to tune, we have other cars...

What does everyone here suggest as far as the best tuner to buy that does the most for the Beretta and other cars like Trans Am, Impala, Camaro, etc?
(I can always save up more money, I'm not trying to let cost limit this decision)

Thanks for the input, past experiences really help with this. :)

HPTuners is the way to go... Tech 2 systems are designed for shops... The HP tuner you buy credits for you car or cars that you want to tune... In order to do the beretta you would have to aquire a 97 Monte Carlo ECU and use that in the 96 since they don't support our ECU's

oh ok...

I was only looking at the tech 2 because its what the dealers use...

I like the HP Tuner because it can tune, flash, and change the vehicles computer data...

I just hope it can scan and troubleshoot just like a regular OBD2 scanner on any vehicle, delete DTC's and such...

If you or someone has use, or know about the HP Tuner, I'd like to hear about your expierences with it, was it easy to use, did it do what you wanted/expected?
Were you able to get custom computer ROMs or whatever for the cars computer from HP Tuners? or do you have to pick and choose all your own changes?

That 97 monte-carlo computer will fit right in place the Beretta socket and run the 3100 SFI v6, right?
(I can re-wire if I have to, but I'd rather not...lol)

Thanks again, if HP tuners is cost effective and I do not have to keep buying licenses left and right for files and computer for my cars, I'm definably going with this! :)

Yes the ECU is a direct drop in, no re-wiring necessary thats why I switched to the 97 Venture. As far as HPTuners goes, it does it all, scan, read/clear DTC's and make changes to the ecu aka tune.

They don't provide the tune changes, you have to learn how to do that yourself, or work with friends to figure out what to change which will a be a direct link to what your scans look like, and its unique to every car.

You buy licenses for the ECU/car its linked to, so as long as you dont kill an ECU I dont see you having to buy more credits.

Honestly all of your questions could be answered by simply reading their website.

Thanks for the information,
I've been all over their web sight for the past few months, and I've been a bit confused about their licensing setup, but that's all better now, i hope...
I was just hoping someone here has/had an HP Tuner or at least worked with one and could tell me their experiences or something...idk

-------------------------------------------------------

I went and bought an ECM from a 97 Monte-Carlo at pull-a-part between my last post and now...lol :)
I'm going to do some more checking, then pick and buy an HP Tuner sometime soon hopefully after I get the money...

Thanks for your help here and in my other posts, I really appreciate it! :)
