Dying Alternator...
This morning on the way to work, I started hearing my belt squeal. It quit for the most part, but at idle it comes back full force. It SEEMS to be coming from the alternator, but I'm not positive...
My question is...
There's a TON of 3100's, but no Berettas, at the local U-Pull. Will the alternators interchange? Is there one year that is better than the rest? And is this a common issue? Thanks guys!

Re: Dying Alternator...
Have the alternator tested first. But you may just have bearing failure. Testing it can show both bearing noise and any electrical charging problems.
And as along as the alternator type you pull from a yard is the same unit, it should be fine. However you could end up with one that is as bad as what you have. I know you can buy replacements for 60-90 bucks.... Our cars eat alternators all the time.

Can I replace the bearing? Alternator seems fine.
Re: Dying Alternator...
Make sure its the bearing first but I don't see why not. If you can find the part.....

I can afford it... Do I want to spend it the week before Christmas... No.
I found one from NAPA with a 3 year warranty for $87 with my government discount.

No I'm simply stating the fact that with your job description you should have enough money to properly fix your car rather than half ass it with a JY alternator and have to fix it again if your in that dire need of one.
I work on missile guidance systems where I work and to be honest I can't prove it since it would be an ITAR violation... Your not the only one who works with rocket science... so there is no need to get overly defensive when somone states or says where you may work.

Re: Dying Alternator...
Not all 3100 alternators will work. W body alternators have a different connector. L body's might be the same a J and N bodys though. Not sure.

Yessir.
Thanks Scannerman.
3X00, why do you feel the need to be condescending then? I don't understand what role my alternator or frugality plays in my choice of vocation??

Re: Dying Alternator...
Your in a rush, you need it now... since you were so forceful in advertising your job in your other thread I brought it up here stating that you say you work for Nasa and your VERY vocal about it, so with that description you should have money to replace the alternator with a new one, or reman one without question, rather than gambling with a JY one or paying for insane shipping costs to get a used one to you fast.
I guess I'm just one who finds being overly frugal when it comes to vehicle electronics just dumb.
