I've been having a similar problem with my 96 Z26 for quite some time now. It never gave me as much of a problem as you seem to be having however. I know it throws a code for the evap system, but I can't remember what the # for the code is. I did find out what the problem is, after having a ton of different people look at it. In my car, the purge solinoid is not getting power from the ECM, therefore it does not turn on, and do what it's supposed to do. Now my car has a surging idle problem, which I have found out is not related to the evap problem. It surges due to a bad IAC valve. I figured I'd let you know what I've found out from having a similar problem. Your not the only one with an evap problem! It's a real pain in the ass. My mechanic said the problem could either be caused by a bad connection somewhere, or the ECM could be messed up. I haven't had this problem cleared up yet, but if I find out anything more I will let you know. Good luck trying to solve your problem, and I'll be keeping an eye on this, as I'd like to see what exactly fixes this problem, if you fix yours before mine gets fixed.

I had the surging problem also at idle, at times. It only did it in the cold weather ...and its getting cold in MD now so I replaced the IAC yesterday.... maybe it was my problem. As for the code for the evap system...that is another problem I'm looking at.

I'm going to start calling this V6 Z26 syndrome. There are two members here that have what seems to be unfixable problems. I think that 96Z26 will get his worked out, but if not he is number 3.
96Z26 was the IAC port very dirty? Did you find any codes?

Money,
The port was not too dirty...cleaned it up. As for the codes the only one was the 1441 code for the evap system.
Also found out my check engine bulb was out...replaced the bulb and now have a check engine light LOL!
Now have to find out what the evap system problem is

Glad to hear that you are getting somewhere. Let me look up the code.
The book lists it as: Evaportive emission system flow during non-purge
Sounds like a broken or somehow plugged line. I would think that there is a break in the line before the purge valve.

I'd call it 96 V6 syndrome, not just all V6's, or all Z26's either. It's this crappy 1st year OBD2 system. Who eles is having this problem MPB?
96Z26, let me know how it's running with the new IAC in there. I haven't replaced mine yet. What brand part did you buy?

ACE and he has a 94 V6 Z26 Aqua.
I sure don't hear about anything like this for the Q4 z26's(lol).

I think it's a lost cause. He has done about everything he could and checked everything.

Well, now the problem has got bad

2.2H8TA, can't tell you on the IAC....after tonight. Car was running fine on the way home from work and then it stumbled a couple times, came up to a light and the car died! The car did not want to start back up on the first try. On the second try the first crank was hard then it fired up but, now the car feels like it has a miss and the valves are tapping...like its jump timing. Now when I try to start it the frist crank is hard, it runs but with a little miss and the valve tap.
Maybe the scanner will pick something up now.....

The problem is not going to just magically go away... If you have a p1441 code then I would start swapping or eliminating the evap lines and plugging them at the intake to see if the solenoid is causing a running issue... Isolate out the evap system since its not NEEDED to run but if the solenoid is doing something weird it could cause running issues.
Also scan data if you have the ability to do so... Without seeing sensor readout's then all you can do is start replacing them one by one.

How many miles are on this car? Just curious, for timing purposes really. A few weeks back, I had a vac leak smoke test done on mine, and found out that the filler neck was rotted out pretty bad. That caused a pretty large vac leak, maybe try that. I had the filler neck replaced, and it didn't really change much however. Your plug wires aren't crossed up or anything like that are they? Just throwing stuff out there now. Can you maybe record a video of the car doing this? I have one of mine getting crazy on me, I'll find it, and post a link so you can compare. Does your car stall? Does it surge, and rev itself when you're sitting? Mine was giving me hard starts, and I just replaced the battery and it starts fine now. God, I have no clue, it's hard enough finding out whats wrong with mine. Lol
