Yeap, that exact thing happened to my 95 base about a year ago. Except i was very luck to be alive! I hopped on the highway in the city of chicago and when i got off the exit ramp to get some food, the strut cracked and gave left as my right tire ran straight. I took it to a shop and they gave it to me to look at, it had broken at the bottom and the stress of the wheel being turned snapped the top end clean off the mounts. That was a stress time.
