Exactly!!!
I'm going to do what Barry and Mark suggested and make a gasket and cover for it. It looks like the lazy ass did it to try to find a fuel leak, which I found in the tank seam, and just threw a piece of tin over it without even attempting to seal it off.
Luckily, I still had a brand spankin new tank and straps in storage, and now I've got a pump and sender on order so this little mess should be dealt with in the next week or 2. Then it's on to the exhaust and the damn wiring fiasco. I am determined to get this thing into respectable shape.
And thanks for the kind words Mark!!!! It's always good to see Betty too!!!!

BTW, any of you guys have any suggestions on a brand or type of gasket to use in this situation?

yes, i have also done a fuel pump this way before... i agree not the proper way, but work in a pinch and not a hazard if done properly. rivets would be ideal likely, as well as even gasket maker between the newly made piece (slightly larger than that which was cut out).
i used sheet metal screws, not long enough to be near the tank, or near the lines. and also actual duct tape... the shiny stuff that is sealed.
if i had people/kids in the backseat regularly, i would not have done that...
even mythbusters has blown that myth anyways!!! lol

Well. I looked around a little bit, and didn't really find a gasket material yet that can do it besides someone that suggested cork, but you could always seal it with a liquid gasket. This seems to be the recommended one:

why not use bed cap foam, or similar.

My only concern is any fumes from the tank or lines or even exhaust eating away at the foam. I am installing a new tank, pump, sender, and exhaust so I suppose I wont really need to worry for quite some time, but I just want to be sure.
Valid concern or no?

I don't see how that would be a problem, only concern I would have with silicone or RTV is it will eat away at steel and rust over time. I would stick to either a foam or cork type gasket or use firewall sealant or window weld/butyl tape for doing a windshield.

Thanks! I had actually thought about window weld but wasn't sure if it was a great idea. I'll give it a shot.

The Z looks awesome very clean. I too like the look of the GTU wheels over the Z26 wheels. I was enjoying the car pictures a lot until I saw the cutout. Some people just do not want to spend time working on their cars. The owner should have at least covered it better.

Thanks for the comment! I did get the hole issue 95% resolved today. I finished forming the piece that was in the car. I put foam tape on one side of it and then put a heavy bead of form-a-gasket on the floor. Then I screwed in stainless steel self-tapping screws with stainless washers. once finished I got back under the car and dremeled offthe extra pats of the screws so they dont puncture the new tank. The only thing I have left to do is spray both sides with rubberized undercoating. Here's some pics:

Good work J!
What a cracked out hole and half ass cover up. It's like the guy got within 10 minutes of sealing it decently, then decided to go hit the meth pipe instead. Goddamn... sometimes I hate people, just in general.

Not pretty but it works and you will thank your self in the future. It's hidden from view anyway
