Battery acid neutralizer stuff? Pep Boys would have it?
The baking soda I know of to clean up the mess, I'm just griping that the mess is SO big! It is literally all over the front corner of the engine bay there. Sigh... The things we do for these cars!

What she's trying to say is baking soda is a battery acid neutralizer. Just use that. Otherwise, any other base, such as soap, washing soda, quick lime or caustic soda will work.

Yep. Mix baking soda with a little water and pour it liberally over all the affected areas. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, rinse and repeat as needed. Cheap and it works.
As to the battery breaking thing? Not encountered that myself, but what can happen is the lead contacts and such inside can be broken from excessive vibration. Bent tray means battery can rock around and vibrate, thus possibly breaking apart components inside the battery. But it takes a lot of this to make that happen, so its not that common I don't think. I did have a battery terminal break once out of a battery, the one that came with my 03' Caravan.

I have a Bosch premium battery in my Beretta. Bought it in November 2010. Still works awesome today.

Yes you can also use baking soda, but I found some stuff that you spray on and it foams up and will clean as well as neutralize the acid, it also turns pink when it's in contact with any acid so you will know if you got it all, or if there is some dried up somewhere just sitting on the paint.
