Tonight I fired it up and got the batter mounted. Took it up the driveway a few times and did a few 1 wheeler pealers to break in the new motor.

Still wheelhops like mad!

It has to be the struts. I have replaced every single rubber component with energy suspension bushings, and poly filled all the motor mounts.

Want to fininsh up a few more things then its time to get it back on the road. Man I need snow tires!

Barry, what subframe setup do you have old style? Or 94 style still? How many dogbones?

The white beater is for the winter!!! DUH! throw some 14" wheels with 185 on the white beater and you're golden.

White beater is no longer mine, its my brother. He starts driving it in january.

I have old subframes with all ES bushings.

Knocking noise came back, it goes in and out. When I rev it hard it knocks for a while then quiets up. Might have to pull a valve cover just to make sure nothing is up under there.

A bad belt tensioner can make a clacking sound. You sure it's the rockers?

Belt tensioner is possible, but this definatly sounds like a topend noise. Its so weird because the engine sounds perfect, then it knocks for a minute, then is quiet again.

Stubborn lifter, something in the cylinder bore, exhaust leak?

Oil clean? You check for that glitter effect? Magnet will not pick it up since it is non ferrous, but with a light tilted at the bucket of oil you should be able to see it.

Yeah Im going to check that stuff tomorrow.

The oil was pretty nasty that came out of it. The motor pulls really good and dosent miss a beat so im really leaning to a sticky lifter or something. Hopefully it will work itself out.

If not, I have a blown up 3500 for parts if I need them, but I sure hope not.

Im thinking if it was something in a cylinder, it would be blown up by now. Not an exhaust leak. It sounds like the noise is coming from under the UIM. In the valley area, which leads me to lifter again. I wonder if putting the valve springs in it had anything to do with it?

Hope a keeper didn't jump off and let the valve slip.

Also possibly its a sticky injector? One time I turned the key the fuel pump went to prime, and ran for a long long time. Could it be flooding one cylinder and causing this?

Tonight I went to play with it more. Oil is normal, no metal. Let it run for about an hour, not one single knock. Pull out the stethoscope and go over the whole engine. Then I started up the base and picked up the sound at all the same points. Nothing unusual at all.....

So I take it down the road a few times. Tune is pretty bad. 10 and 11afr at wot, a little rich around town. Runs strong, and it didnt knock again...

Pull it into the drive way and let it idle for a while and still nothing.

So how can a engine run perfect, idle perfect, pull hard to 6500 rpms and not miss a single beat just randomly start making knocking noises that will make you cringe? I have no idea.

So all I can think of is a sticky injector that is slowly getting better, or a sticky lifter that is getting better....

Im going to make a new exhaust that comes out the back again. I will ditch the cherry bomb and just use my cat and dynomax. hopefully its not raspy and ricy.

If you are flooding, you should see the results on that spark plug. I'd go with lifter at this point if your plug readings come out ok.

Its too intermitent for that.

Its hard to explain. It will knock for a good 20 seconds. I rev it up a few times and it goes away. Almost like you need to "clear it out"

Check your plug readings. Those will not hold back information on what's going on in that engine.
