Those things are not suppose to rust.
Have you spoken to ARP?

Why not? they are black oxide coated, NOT black hardcoat, or stainless bolts... Its steel... they will rust.
I spoke with Ben, and he was supposed to be talking with his dealer, he never got back to me yet, and I also sent an e-mail to Alamo Motorsports the place I bought them from, and he hasn't got back to me either.
Do you really think I'll get anywhere going direct to ARP?

When I contacted them on another matter I got an e-mail the next day.
But if the damn things rust then I just saved a couple of hundred dollars off my WOT invoice. I'll just use new bolts.

Info back from Alamo.
Jonathan:
I'm sorry, for some reason I did not get the email you sent on the 17th.
I apologize if this was due to an error in our server.
Here is my opinion, but I do recommend that you also get an opinion directly from ARP (800-826-3045, ask for Tech Support.)
For them to rust in the manner depicted in the images means that they were exposed to water at some point. These items are not stocked items. They are special order, which means that they came directly from ARP to you.
They were purchased in January of 2007. These bolts come from the factory with a light coat of oil on them, which would prevent rust from developing during shipping or storage. If you are convinced that the rusting happened solely as a result of the installation of the studs in your application then I would say that it will most likely happen again with new studs.
What you see is in no way a deficiency on the part of ARP's studs. Steel in contact with water will corrode. While the studs are not exposed to the water jacket they would quite probably be exposed to the oil system.
If you ever, at any point, had water in your oil, then that would cause what you're seeing. That would be made worse if the engine sat for any time. The water could collect there in the passages where the studs pass.
While engine oil itself prevents rust, over time it collects materials that are corrosive in nature. Allowed by time to separate from the oil, it would be very damaging to the studs.
Let me know what ARP says. Thanks,
Chris Myer
So really... Yes these bolts will rust when exposed to water, they are just steel... just as I thought, black oxide coating does not prevent that... Best way to prevent what happenend is coat it with lots of oil or paint.
I'm still waiting to see what ARP says. I doubt they will replace them.

Yes black oxide rusts fast, I need to paint the PCV hold down bracket allen cap bolt I used. It's rusting up. It's black oxide and was to some network rack mounts so it's not meant really for weather.
Just hit them with some 80 grit sanding wheel and the paint will stick fine.

You would think that arp would coat them in a way to prevent this. Its not like you are mis-using this product or anything.

If I pulled that set of ~$200 Premium Head studs out of an engine of mine I would be all over the manufacturer!
See what ARP says and I would be asking several questions as to why I should buy these when speaking to them!

You know, I always thought that they were coated from end to end. Well that's why I'm here, to learn. I still say grease would be better. I guess a good epoxy paint would work well.

They are coated from end to end... Just black oxide is NOT a corrosive protective coating.
I'm still waiting to hear back from ARP.

I should have said a noncorrosive coating. You would think they would put something like that on with how much they cost. What a jip.
Your not mad about this? I wouldn't be mean to them, but I'd sure say to them that there needs to be something better on there.

What can I say... they bolts performed as sold... I just happend to get condensation in the heads which caused them to rust.
Am I upset... yeah, but what can I do. I drove this motor for a winter, and then the car sat outside with the engine from oct-dec before getting in a garage for paint and storage, so it may be my own fault that it built up condensation and then rusted.
If I get a new set... yahoo, if not I'll buy 8 bolts from Ben at WOT and then be sure to protect them better.
crap happens, and you can't blame someone else all the time... No where in their documentation does it say that these bolts will not rust so I can't hold anything against them.

GM's coating on their head bolts is really effective. ARP should get on that.
If you want to go back to bolts I have a full set of 3500 bolts. I don't know if there stretch bolts or not though.
