Make sure you sand down the paint applied on the area where the cam tower gaskets go. You might be fine but just to be safe I would.
Should have gone with a powder coat....that would have gave it some shine! But then again you would need to remove the cover all together and that dam crank pulley bolt is a bitch!

It actually mount behind the trans (closer to the firewall) and yes it does fit a 5spd. I have one on my car. Geoff do you have any pics of the one you're talking about fabbing? The stock piece is light duty...Money pit Beretta wrote:I have the STB and the frame brace. How do I say this...the frame brace fits with the 3T40, but not the 4T60 and I'm not sure if you can use it with your 5sp. It mounts in front of the trans on the frame. Someone else will have to chime in on this.
Edit: here's an old pic to show the brace.

When I finally get 5 min to look at it, I'm planning on making one as well. Should be rather simple to make up one.

This is the only pic i have of it at the moment. I will try and get a better one later on
Its a lil hard to see but if you look closely you will see the round stock welded to the bottom of the stock support.

Well, been waiting on parts for a little over a week. They should be in tomorrow hopefully. I need to get the head done (I need to heli coil the cam tower bolt holes, install valves and lap them, swap springs and retainers) and I HOPE to have this ol' girl screaming down the hwy by the weekend again. I'm in SERIOUS withdrawal!
So right now I'll concentrate on getting her mobile again, THEN I'll worry about new bracing for handling!

I DID remove the cover all together and the bitch wasn't the crankshaft end or bolt at all. It was jacking the motor up high enough to get clearance between the webbing mount bosses in the block and the unibody! What a PITA! I'm not too worried about a leak there as the area was pretty smooth prior to paint and stayed as such after. We'll see what happens. It's actually a pretty easy fix if it starts leaking there compared to what I've got done and am doing. I'm basically rebuilding the top end of the engine at this point!DOHC_tuner wrote:Make sure you sand down the paint applied on the area where the cam tower gaskets go. awesome.. what overall modifications do you hope to achieve chp wise? are you just building a solid q4 or tuning it too? I am dumb and need it explained simply... nobody ever taught me anything about these cars and I'd love to have my gtz around 200chp... I heard that a header would get that 20 wheel hp gain, so in terms of regular bhp would that gain a higher hp number (say 30).. that and an exhaust + cai + custom burnt chip is all i want for my gtz.. I'm hoping to keep her alive and ahead of the other cars in my area

Well, I'm reasonably positive of gaining back at LEAST 10 chp just from going back to to the MUCH better flowing head (086) vs the 456 or even 753 head. Then add in the smaller crank pulley (the correct HO crank pulley this time!) and a properly seated and torqued headgasket along with lapped in valves giving me (I hope) a MUCH better compression psi. I think honestly , I'll REGAIN somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 chp. If not more.
You'd be amazed what simple clean work and a good flowing , properly built head can do for a motor. Along with the rotational mass being lowered with the smaller crank pulley.
I already have a WAI, but I'd say gains from it are minimal. 1-2 hp at most.
I'm banking on an increase of roughly 20 chp.
Ron's header is DOCUMENTED on Q4F to give an AVERAGE whp gain of 22-23 WHP once installed with a correlating exhaust.
So , yes, Ron's header is on my "to do list" as well for the future.
But , in short, for now I'm just building a SOLID , as it SHOULD be , stout little Q4 to continue spanking v-6's and v-8's with while maintaining in the 30mpg+ range on fuel.

I vote for the future....increase the compression (custom pistons), LD9 Crank and rods, (stroker), Ron's header, W41 cams, timing belt swap kit, tune.
Result....well over 210hp for sure.

You buying? Because if you are, I'm down for sure. Except for that gay ass timing belt swap.....DOHC_tuner wrote:I vote for the future....increase the compression (custom pistons), LD9 Crank and rods, (stroker), Ron's header, W41 cams, timing belt swap kit, tune.

Twas a late night for me. Got some jobs done today and some errands, picked up the last of what I need to get the car back together and picked up my valves and AWESOME shape new fuse panel cover at the post office.
So , yeah, I'm STILL up and posting before I hit the sack. I'm going to bed very shortly! And I'm sleeping in!
Thanks to Geoff (90gtzho) and Shawn (Summitbalt08) respectively!
First things first. For those of you who are "Quad 4 challenged" or just didn't know and had asked why swap to an 086 and what are the differences when compared to an 086 , what gains, etc. Below are side by side pics of the 086 I'm putting on and the 456 head I took off, exhaust port side. I think the pics will speak a million words, but note the HUGE port size difference.
The 456 is on the right, the 086 on the left.
The second pic is a close up of the 456 port and the third pic is a close up of the 086 port.
