Did the pickup tube fall out of it? or not seal good?

Because that's definitely full out carnage over the whole motor, and not specific to say one bearing like it typically is.

I would say either the new pump failed or the pickup fell out as Jon stated. That motor DEFINITELY reflects drastic "all at once" OP failure. It flat FLEW apart. Surprised you didn't put a piston through the pan or block, lol.

Pickup tube was solidly in the pump. I think had i not have shut it down as soon as i did, i very well may have thrown a piston one way or the other.

i wonder if not the oil pump failed, but maybe a main artery got clogged somehow and thats what killed it. Did you try to see if after you pulled the caps if you could get the motor to roll over or are the pistons stuck in their holes?

And it was a brand new pump!!!
dont ya have a oil pressure guage?

let this be a warning to some of you who dont realize how important that guage is, if your oil pressure ever drops below 20psi, pull over to a safe place and shut her down or you'll toast your engine!!!

Geoff...i pulled all the caps but the two end mains and it spun freely...not a single piston was stuck in its cylinder.

Speedy...i do have a gauge...a factory one that didn't work. Believe me...i am putting an aftermarket mechanical gauge on this motor.

It was a Melling HO pump. The other thing that may have led to its demise was that i switched to synthetic right before i left for Chicago.

I doubt the synthetic did that since switching should NOT be that drastic to any motor in that way. It seems like something else happend somewhere, if it was pump failure, or pump drive failure, or something got clogged who knows...

Melling use to be a great pump! Is there some sort of by-pass plug on that?
Nevermind.
