I'm going to repeat what was said earlier about any threads... HELICOIL. I just did ALL my exhaust bolts and it made a WORLD of difference, I was able to tighten the headers down GOOD this time and none were sloppy feeling. Plus now they will last MUCH longer.

Any and all threads that are in aluminum, if you have the ability to helicoil them DO IT. Especially if its a location that sees the bolt installed and removed often, aluminum wears out way to quick.

The worst part about this is the motor is tore down and it looks like it will towards Bfest when this thing comes together.. Im going to spray the cylinders down with WD40 so it should be good.

I wonder if you can buy them in bulk cheap.

Do knurled pressed in inserts hold up well on Quad 4 heads? Would you use steel ones?

Would i need to use the heli-coil inserts if im using ARP head studs? I have never worked with ARP studs before so i have no idea..

No reason unless old treads are significantly damaged.

Yes, they do hold up well. And yes I did. On the SCX. Number three spark plug hole was stripped I discovered upon changing the spark plugs shortly after getting it. I knurled it and it held up terrific. I even removed the plug several times to check on it.

I'm not a fan of a pressed in insert since its a non threaded mating surface your now relying on holding. Granted they probably work great for some applications, but for a part thats taking a lot of clamping force I prefer to use the helicoil.

Really with the helicoil all your adding is the steel threads between the part you are installing and un-installing on a repetitive basis so they wont wear out as easily as the aluminum ones would have.

How is it non threaded?

Is your take on a knurled thread insert different from the catalog?

This shop is making this very VERY stressful!!!!!

The shop wants to pack everything up (parts from the engine being torn down) and get it out of the way, which i understand. They said if they do that, that they probably wont want to mess with it when i get the parts from Jamie. The reason for that is because they have everything laid out how it goes together. Im thinking that if they did later on, they would just charge even more just because of figuring out the parts and such. So if I have them pack the stuff up and kurt decides he doesnt want to do that then im screwed lol. Worst case scenario i might have to pay them to get it together the 1900 or whatever and get the parts i get from Jamie put on later...

I could just have them put it together on the old gaskets and stuff. If i did that i wouldnt drive it or anything i would just let it sit until i had somebody fix it. Just so the parts arent in boxes and containers... Even though this doesnt sound like a good idea to me.. i dont know what to do..

Edit.. Then again i do have the old motor sitting in the garage assembled if we have to look at where stuff goes.

How is it non threaded?

Your pressing in the insert into the material correct? that would make the insert and the mating surface not threaded together. If your not pressing it in then its not a knurled insert. I feel something like that can be pulled out eventually since its only friction holding it in and not the physical interference of a thread.

Think of it this way, you press the insert in, you bolt the headers to it... that insert is now holding the headers to the head, but if the insert begins to slip out then the headers are not flush against the head anymore but your bolt is still tight as hell.

Shawn, I'm almost positive if Kurt says he will help you then you can count on him unless something completely out of his hands happens... But I doubt he would just stiff you.

I think you just need to bring that car home and have someone help you get it together or do it yourself with some help. That shop has screwed you over enough already.

I know Kurt would never stiff me, that thought never ran through my mind. I just have to make this first decision on the fly.
