Lol! I'm just sick of rust is all. My new hood looked fine when I grabbed it at the junkyard, but it had a lot to hide underneath.

Epic fail on the header coating this time around... not sure what killed the rear, but the whole tube coming from the front stripped the coating off. I'm not positive on if it was due to the coating being too thin, or the metal having a foreign contaminates on it... I'll re-coat them again this winter I guess but this time I'll be a little bit more generous with the coating, and I'll also buy more since I pretty much ran out this time around.

Was that VHT that you used or something else?

No it was the same stuff I used last time, VHT is glorified BBQ paint and will always eventually burn off. I was using Tech-Line spray on Ceramic Coating... DIY Ceramic for headers really. If you prep and spray it right it will last a long time, AND has the properties of sending your headers out for ceramic coating, not just preventing them from rusting.

And yes your three week wait still looks bad since yours still discolored as well. I can re-paint these as many times as I want and ONLY incur downtime when I can afford it... not when the vendor feels like screwing me over. There is a big difference between a vendor having your balls in a vice and you making the decision.

The rear header was never coated before either, this is the first time it's seen anything more than spray paint so it's not a big deal really. I'll worry about it after this season and spend the time to get it right.

Just because I'm the dumbass here, but what the hell does coating do for the headers anyway, other than make them pretty? Sounds like a lot of hassle to me, after reading all the comments/troubles you all seem to have with it....

Its a Ceramic coating, or thermal heat barrier... it keeps the heat in the header where its more affective and not in your engine bay where it melts plastic.

Have you tried roughing up the surface of the headers with scotchbrite or a 100-200 grit sandpaper? Maybe they don't have anything to stick to.

Last time I coated them they had been blasted with 120grit aluminum oxide... This isn't my first painting rodeo there Geoff The issue is headers are so sensitive due to the high heat so any contamination below the surface will kill the adhesion properties of the paint as soon as it gets hot enough to "burn off" Best way to eliminate that issue is to pre-bake them before coating them, and I still don't have an oven large enough to do that.

I suppose the only other choice would be a heat wrap of some sort then. That makes some sense, just seems like a lot of trouble, that's all.
