i work as a conductor for Norfolk Southern Rail Road and they have several "heritage" units, i got the chance to be on this one and figured i would share with you guys... unfortunetly we aren't allowed to take pictures at work so i had to google a picture but you get the point.



im not a train buff by any means, but i do think they are neat in a historical sense.

Looks like that old girl doesn't move anymore. Kind of an odd place to leave it. I'm use to the norm: find a park, cut just enough track for it to sit on and now you have a display.

Well that is a display... This is a Railroad Museum in Willimantic CT that local people have been restoring. They rebuild the old loco roundhouse and table that used to be there. This set of tracks is just behind the roundhouse and this loco is on it. The tracks aren't used for anything any longer.

it is a modern day engine, its a ge es44ac unit. its brand new. but they painted them in the pennsylvania railroad colors, they did some others like lehigh valley railroad, nickelplate, central new jersey, reading railroad, and more... i think its neat they did it in memory of them.

ah ok so it's a retro paint job in memory of the old designs and companies, got it.

i was in one of them old engines once down in washington nj, we had to pick it up and bring it back with us... it was pretty neat seeing the inside of them, kinda like a flash back to the 50's.. they actually have crank windows!!!

I wish I had taken pictures inside because that loco is fully open. I checked out the entire engine compartment as well as a secondary smaller engine in the rear. The front main had dual superchargers and the rear had a Holset turbo strapped to it.

im not sure how they were set up back then, but now they use one big turbocharged engine to run them, i always loved the sound of the air compresser on a modern engine, if you ever heard it, it sounds like a jake brake... and the dynamic on the old ge's is awesome too. sounds like your standing next to a jet airplane

btw, just incase anyone doesnt know, theres 2 manufactures of locomotives, general electric is one, and general motors is the other...

Wow I sure don't know as much as you guys!
I drove a switcher for a short time when I was 10. My uncle could talk people into anything. I bet he could talk you into selling him the pants that you were wearing(lol). We pulled up and he just started talking to the guy running it right at the RR crossing. I told the guy I had an idea of how to dive it because I had model trains and then I was running the throttle.
I got to ride in a steam train in Colorado when I was a kid too. I have a great love for those.

As a side note my model train was just like the one in your photo 3X00. Lots of rust on those rails so it's easy to tell that they are not in use anymore.

i really like trains, and would love to learn more about them. life has been really getting in the way though. i do have a fine collection of new boxed HO sets ready for when i'm an old man though... if i can keep them along my journey
