Taking that bulb out will let the engine light come on, and the fan will constantly run.

Yes...when the engine light was on I thought its something worse than a broken bulb definitely.
That bulb is inside a check circuit with the fan relais and some other important things, therefore the ECM can not distinguish which one of these is broken.

Interesting, since I do have that bulb out in my 92, (because I have auto trans cluster in manual trans car and it light something different, can't remember what it was) no error codes.

removing the shift light bulb can have the quad driver DTC pop up, but not all calibrations have it enabled. might as well try it.

Nice looking car. I assume from your name you have the 2.2 four-cylinder? With that engine and the five-speed, you probably get as good or better MPG than most of the new cars in the dealer lots... I can't tell from the pic for certain, but it looks like someone put "Beretta GT" emblems on your doors. They look good, and the car looks very well kept. Congrats on your first Beretta, I warn you though, they can be addictive.

what about replacing the bulb with a resistor of equivalent resistance, or close to it?

would work just fine...
those bulbs are around .2 amps, maybe a little less? that's a little under 3 watts that the resistor would need to dissipate when at 14 volts.
you can go significantly lower though, the quad-driver's sensing circuit isn't that sensitive... could put in a ~200 ohm resistor for roughly 1 watt or ~400 ohm for 1/2 watt or ~800 ohm for 1/4 watt or ~1600 ohm for 1/8 watt.
i'm not sure i would go much below 1600...
