im trying to change the oil pressure sending unit on my 2000 pontiac grand am, i want to do this without removing the starter, the replacement sensor socket size is 26mm, i belive thats the size of the one on there, but can anyone confirm this? or is there a different size one on the car, and why the f cant i find a 26mm socket??? my sears doesnt have it, advance doesnt, auto zone doesnt... what is this socket the unicorn? 26 deep anyways. i have 26 shallow.

Why not just remove the starter? It's 2 bolts an will make thing a lot easier. As far as the socket goes you should be able to pick one up at NAPA or just about any auto parts store. They are fairly common. I know lisle makes one, search part number 13250.

I have the baby grand a.m. starter in my Beretta that's probably why I neverhad a problem

hahaha this is interesting.. my sender just started gushing oil, and i've been looking at previous posts a few times today (i used the search function, be proud!)

moneypit! your name pulled up several times! and yes, a wrench was the best tool for the job is what i have taken in. pull the starter... it's what 3 extra bolts and 1 or 2 nuts for the wires? get that crap outta the way so you can see, and don't have to fight with it. i'm glad i also do not have an A/C compressor there anymore!

No you can not, there is not enough room for a wrench the proper size to fit the OPSU... the best way is with a OPSU socket but if the one you bought is too big then maybe they don't make one to properly fit. Right now I think the easiest way would be to remove the starter and use a set of channel locks or a large adjustable wrench since the arm should be shorter.

shouldn't be any different, if not more difficult on the 3.1 due to the coils being there as well. Same location same OPSU same socket size necessary.

Well the one on the 90 was dripping oil out of the pig tail so I had to change it. I tested a socket and found that it would more than likely snap the sensor off the metal base. So I used a wrench on it. I don't know what to say. I did it and I'm the kind of guy that will leave stuff in the way just so I don't have to put it back on later(or break or damage something that I don't have the money to replace). I may have taken the coils/ICM off I don't remember. All I remember seeing in my mind is the sensor and my wrench and it was a clear shot(nothing in the way). I was working from under the car, but that is the only way.

i dropped the starter, got it out, put a new one in, reinstalled the starter, not a hard job, but more of a pita if you dont have a lift or garage(gtz is hording up both bays of mine), but all in all, i got it done, starter doesnt seem to engage right sometimes, i guess the oil getting into it would have something to do with that... should probably have replaced it right away, but i didnt...

doing mine tomorrow, what did you use to pull it off? socket or was there wiggle room for a wrench?
