Rusted Trunk

I know that its not anything permanent or anything like that but i went ahead and cut the whole spare tire compartment out of my trunk from where it was rusted, i went about 2-3 inches above where the paint was bubbled and easily bent from the rust and made the cuts there. i have 18 gauge steel placed over the top of the compartment with about a 3 inch overlay onto the actual good metal of the car. i had my classmate put tack welds onto the steel to keep it in place and used a tube of seam sealer on the seams on the bottom side of the trunk. i got a can of rubberized undercoating and sprayed both the bottom and the top part of the new piece of steel. i might give it another coat of undercoating tomorrow. the auto body teacher said that that type of rust damage came from water getting into the compartment and being kept in it and not drained or wiped up, he told me this was the best way to fix it and that it would do nicely for a while. i do not want to get rid of my gtz.
