Never buy a cheap replacement clutch, Mine broke >_>

Post by Beretta1234567 »

So I paid 100 Dollars at Advanced Auto, bought a clutch.

3,000 Miles later, something snapped.
I was backing up in my driveway and I heard a few loud metallic cracks, the engine stalled and I couldn't get it out of gear.

External inspection everything looks fine. I jacked up the car and it disengaged, and everything turns in neutral.
Clutch peddle got really easy to press. LOL

Its not apart yet, but I plan to add photos of the clutch in the future because I'm curious how it broke.

Its a 1988 Beretta GT, 2.8 5 SPD.
I'm hoping the fork is okay, I don't have a spare and nobody makes them anymore...

That aside, does anyone have any suggestions as to what my next clutch should be?
I'm not to sure what I should buy, I want something that will actually last and is good quality.
While its apart I might as well replace all of it.

Oh, besides the disk and pressure plate, there is the bearing that pushes the pressure plate, is there another bearing I should replace while its apart?

Spec 3 seems to be popular, but what do I know?

Check http://www.rockauto.com

70,000+ miles on my Quad and the original clutch is just fine.

Centerforce has a good reputation in general. I do not know about that specific clutch. I'm running a Spec 2+.

I wonder if you have a pressure plate problem, or a master/slave issue.

I put the master and slave brand new with the clutch and a new hose, I hope they are not going bad. Lol

After unlocking the wheels after it bound up and broke, the clutch goes down 1/3 travel then gets hard.

I'm guessing the pressure plate broke.

I'm still deciding though if I should wait till summer and fix it, or just sell the car for 2,000 dollars.
Idk yet.
Its in great shape, just needs a clutch...

106,000 Miles. And well taken care of.

You'd just have to tow it as I recomend changing the clutch before you start that engine again to prevent any major damage that might possibly occure from something not going in the right spot.

Clean underneath, there is a little rust in a couple places but not bad.
Best You will probably see on an 88 Beretta GT in the whole USA.

Forgot to say, its a 2.8L v6 MPFI 5 SPD.

The Z has a napa clutch and the s10 has an advance clutch and I haven't had any problems with either. I replaced the pressure plates in both tho.

The centerforce for the beretta is no better than a stock replacement. The space limitations mean they can't use their weighted pressure plate which is their claim to fame.

Found out the fly wheel is 142 tooth.

EDIT EDIT EDIT:

Finally took the transmission off the car. But I forgot to take photos, lol.

Turns out the throw out bearing seized up, and rotated.
This caused the fork to pop out of the bearing and the fork was directly on top of the pressure plate fingers.
I got lucky because the engine stalled when this happened, so the fork was not damaged/torn up at all.

I guess I'm glad no body took the offer to buy the car before I fixed it. I bought a Center-force 1 racing clutch, new fly wheel, Centerforce TOB, and a 3.1L stage 2 racing chip.
I plan to install all of this and upgrade the car from 2.8L to the 3.1L v6. And use it as my daily driver and race car.
In my opinion its worth it because its not rusty at all, and I finally have a car that I'm willing to race and beat all them jap cars with! :burn:
