Ok, so when my sister owned the car before me, she had it converted to r134a. I bought a couple cans and the hose and now I can't find where to refill it. I was told that maybe it's accessible from underneath the car. Also, how would I know which is the high pressure side or the low pressure side? Please help, this heatwave in the Chicago area right now is murder on my asthma!

Someone here will know. It's been so long since I have been under the hood of an 89 I've forgotten. You are looking for a fitting on the low pressure side of the system, so it will be somewhere between the evaporator (the part inside the car) and the compressor. Follow the line from the firewall to the accumulator and then to the compressor. Most of the GM's have a fitting on the accumulator.

The low pressure fitting to charge the A/C is on the accumulator which is mounted under the battery / airbox area.

Thank you Cliff! I'm going to do it in the morning. If I have trouble, I'll be back.

Cliff- This is gonna sound like a stupid question, but where is the high side fitting in an 88GT? I know about the low side fitting down below the battery area, but have never seen any reference to the high side fitting.
Thanks,

High side will be either on the compressor, or on the line that runs from the compressor to the inlet of the condensor.

low side should have a blue cap and high side should have a red cap
why is the freon low? tis would be a good time to evacute it and run a vac on it then recharge it, make sure you get freon with oil so you don't burn up the compressor

You have to remove one of the sensors on the high pressure line. One is used for high pressure cutout and the other is used for the cooling fan control. I just eliminated the cooling fan one all together so it runs all the time when the A/C is on.

Easy way to find it is to find the A/C lines, then push to open the valve.
The one that goes SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH is the high side.
The one that goes shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh is the low side.
