Hood and Fender Alignment

I've been having some issues with the drivers side of my hood not being aligned with the top of the left fender.
The hood is flush to the fender between the hinge and the windshield, and also down by the front edge of the hood. The problem I'm having is in the area between. The hood seems to stick above the fender line.
I put the palm of my hand on it and leaned down on it to see if I could get it to be flush with the fender. Guess I leaned a little too hard and dented it in slightly. The top of the fender has the rubber pieces in the right places, is not full of dirt, and the vertical lip is pretty straight from the front of the fender to the back. The car's never been hit in the front.
What could be causing the hood to buckle up like this? The passenger side is fine in this area. It almost looks like one of the spotwelds between the outer hood skin and the formed support panel underneath is maybe letting go...anyone here ever experience this before or know how to fix it?
Thanks,
