Dual Exhaust

While I was working today my mind was wondering, and I got to thinking about exhausts(how bored was I?). Anyways, I've seen true dual exhausts (without a Y pipe) with H pipes that connected the two pipes to equalize the pressure between them and then I've seen ones without the H pipe. Why would one setup be used over the other?

h-pipes are best!!
equalizes pressures in both pipes an also when the work together in a h or y setup they help pull the exhaust from the motor in pulses.  a exhaust pulse is when the exhaust valve opens an the piston pushes it out. when they are equalized in a h or y setup they help push an pull the next one along. when both banks are hook up together in this setup h or y what happens is bank 1 cyl 1 just fired and bank 2 cyl 6 is pushing out exhaust the next stroke bank 1 cyl 1 is pushing out exhaust  an bank 2 cyl 6 is closed an  it pulse is helping banks 1 cyl 1 exhaust out..
so in a h or y you have all 6 cyl pushing an pulling.
in a non h or y you would only have 3 working..

sorry very conplicated

H pipe or X pipe usually increases HP and TQ over a completely divorced dual system.  I've been wanting to add an x-pipe to the wagon.

Sounds different too.

Thanks for the explanation, Mr Goodwrech, I think I understand what you are saying.

Again out of sheer curiousity, does anyone here with dual exhausts have a true setup, or does everyone just have a Y after the rear axle?

It works best on RWD automobiles.

I've never seen a true dual system on a Beretta.  It's possible, but definately not worth it.

Why not worth it, neglible gains?

Basically.
Our engines are not big enough to require anything larger than 2 1/2" unless you have major mods.

My 98 TA  an so does my 93 chevy truck have h-pipes!! i think the 98s more like a x though.. both have headders with 3" collectors gowing down to 3"oval pipe on the TA an  2 1/2" pipes on the truck. the TA runs high flow cats the truck none.  both running flowmaster 30 or 40 single chamber mufflers..  both have verry deep rumble an deep tone.  with the truck sounding more like a camaro with really loud pipes...

For the beretta you could find a larger down pipe then split it for a good duel setup..
but gowing duel from the manifolds would be a big pain in the a$$.  only if you found someone with a mandral pipe bender it might work.  cause bending it in a normal bender it would just kink up an not work well..

The only way to do a true dual on these cars would be with a pipe off each manifold on the v-6 (or header if you buy or build them) or a LO Quad4 tubular manifold without the lower 2-1 section.

The V-6 would be very difficult to do correctly because the cross pipe location is supposed to be equal distance for each bank of cylinders.

The Quad would be easiest, but why....
