Engine stopped while driving, later started again

Here's what happen:

I was driving my daily commute like usual, car ran smooth as ever, but then:

Felt a 'Thud' and the engine stopped, no early warning or no issues of any kind before that.
As I was rolling downhill, tried to start the engine again, but the gauges went all crazy and didn't fire up. =@

Stopped at the side of the road to see under the hood, found nothing of interest, then tried to start it several times,
There was no SES light, starter spun the engine great (recently new bat and starter motor) But nothing.

Then couple minutes later, I give it another try and it fires up, but misfiring really really bad (half of the fuel must have exploded in the exhaust pipe)
I floor the gas pedal, and then it's back to normal again, and I could continue my commute.

My Guess is that 'something' happened in the Crank Position Sensor, and it should be replaced.. But I'm curious to any other explanation, so anyone? :unknown:

3.1 / 5spd btw.

Almost sounds like when my "chip" went bad on my 3.1 auto. I lost all kinds of things, like the speedo and the HVAC controls(and a few others). My car never did die and was in limp home mode. Once I got it home and shut it off it wouldn't restart. A tow truck driver came the next day and was able to start it by flooring it. Sounds like you may have more than one thing wrong.

CKP, as you said, or wiring to it from the ICM -were the roads wet? Maybe the power or ground to the ICM is getting spotty? Our wiring is getting old, so I keep coming back to that... I am unsure regarding the 'thud' though...

My 2.4 Twin Cam Z-24 acted a little like that too recently -the ICM was dying on me, but on that car the injectors kept cranking in the fuel even without spark so =@ went the muffler (split wide open), the MPFI V-6s we have don't do that -if the CKP quits, you get neither spark nor fuel. But, if the ICM malfunctions or the wiring goes wonky, you could get unburned fuel flowing through that needs to be cleared-out before it will run.

What about a slug of water in the fuel tank? I know you take exceptional care of your cars, but could that have happened at a gas station?

Thud most likely came from horrible misfire and engine shutting violently.

Road was wet yes, also the car is quite moist inside, so may also be shot circuit somewhere.

I purchased new crank position sensor, but the car drove just fine today with old sersor. Going to replace it anyway.

spray a mist of water onto the coil/ign mod. Try and drive it immediately after.

something very similar like this happened to me..it just ended up only being the alternator...surprisingly

The old CPS I pulled out, broke in multiple pieces, had turned quite crispy down there, most likely original part.

Haven't had any issues after the one on first post.. go figure.
