3400 swap questions

Just wanted to compile a list of unanswered questions for my swap, any help would be greatly appreciated. Ideally trying to make my first engine swap/removal/reinstall as smooth as possible.

1. Do I need a 3 wire coolent temp sensor, if so does anyone have a wiring diagram for modification? Can i just purchase a new one for a 1991 3.1 and install it.
2. Clutch - has anyone just used OEM with ok results? Not sure if i want to invest in a performance clutch at the moment on an unknown functional swap
3. Vacuum line routing - any tips or tricks.
4. Rad hoses, I would prefer to keep the 3400 water pump and timing cover as it is much newer than the one in my 3.1. Will the Venture van hoses work or is there a direct bolt on that can be acquired. I do have my OEM rad.
5. Oil pressure sensor, located on the front of the engine, will the one that is currently in my 3400 be compatible with the OBD1 computer for the cluster gauge.

1. Only if you don't have a location for the fan switch and the gauge sensor. Most of the older engines are a two pin sensor for the fan switch and a single wire sensor for the temp gauge, If you have a spot for both of those sensors then your fine... If not then you need to do the same wiring as they do for the 3100 to 3400 swap.

2. That would be subject to how you drive as well... do you plan to beat this or drive it like a DD and easy?

3. Your on your own... LOL

4. Just use a factory 3100 lower and upper rad hose I belive they will both fit with no issues.

5. Probably not.. especially if it's a short sensor, those are for the light only and will not control a gauge... just use the 3.1 sensor or get a new one.

If you are doing a 3400 5 speed swap, you can use the stock clutch and get away with it most likely. James swapped a 3400 into his 5 speed 90 GT and used a brand new stock clutch.. hasnt had any issues. He has even beat on it and all that still no issues. Just make sure you break the clutch in properly.

I got all as described the only mistruth to this thread is the use of both 1994+ rad hoses

My car has the old style rad and bottle ended up combining my old hose and the new one to make it fit correctly !
