Would anybody know off the top of there head, what engines bolt in to an 88 Beretta?
One Ebay listing says an 89 Cavalier engine won't work.
Could I run a later block with the 88 top end installed?
I'm just exploring what it might take getting a car running reliably again.

3.1 & 2.8 will. Swapping brackets, accessories, vehicle specific options and production bolt ons are normally expected.
89-91 to call it safe. Cavaliers had 3.1 until 94. 3.1 in a Beretta was issued til 93.
