Hey all, first post here, just got my first real car, an '88 GT. It's in pretty good condition, but theres a couple of problems i'd like to know more about.

The power windows only seem to work when the engine is running. I dont have the manual or anything, so i'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way. It's just annoying to have to turn it on to close the windows. I've checked the fuse and such, its all good.

As well, the low-beam headlights aren't working, i've checked the fuses again, and i'm going to try replacing the bulbs tomorrow, i was just wondering if this was a common problem? I'm just hoping it's not the wiring.

also, any suggestions on raising the drivers side seat? it's not even all that important, would just make it more comfortable.

Windows should only work if the key is turned.   That would be very bad if they worked all the time!  What an easy breakin that would be!

I wire mine up to work all the time. handy for when its about to rain and the windows are down.

your seat rail is probably broken. you need to pull the carpeting out and check out the neat rust you have forming where it bolts to.

If it isn't the bulbs for the lights, you might need to replace the high/low beam swithc.  Its located on the steering colum under the dash...  like $15-$20 at Autozone?  I had to replace mine earlier this year.  Good luck, and welcome!

well, i replaced the bulbs, and that wasn't the problem. This high/low beam switch, is it under the plastic panelling under the steering column? YOr do you mean the actualy highbeam-lowbeam button, beside the steering wheel?

And the power windows work fine, i just couldn't figure out which way to turn the key to get em to work

The actual switch itself is mounted along the backside of the steering column about half-way up. You'll have to remove the plastic covers from underneath the front of the dash to get at it.

I think the mounting holes in the base of the switch are slotted, which will allow for some up and down adjustment. There is a rod which runs down thru the column which is activated by a ball on the end of the pivot point for your turn signal lever (this is pretty easy to see if you have your steering wheel off).

If the switch has slipped down on the column and come out of adjustment, then there's no way that the pivot ball can move to rod far enough to move the switch from hi to low. It's a fairly simple item to replace.
