Just a suggestion here, but could it be a head gasket if was leaking enough drip down the side of the engine, down the tranny?

Try a compression check.

How I would do a compression check, find the right the gauge and the correct fitting to screw into the spark plug hole.  Then use an air compressor to generate the right ammount of air into that cylinder.  Repeat per cylinder.  You then compare all the numbers you got to the OEM numbers.  should be within specs.

That should tell you if your head/gasket is shot.
