Intermittent miss under load

My 88GT's 2.8 just recently started to get an intermittent misfire under load. The car idles fine, and at highway cruising speeds, doesn't miss a beat. I notice it mostly when winding it out in first and second gear.

I just replaced all 3 coil packs today, and I know that the plugs/plug wires are ok. The ignition module is 2-3 yrs old. My gas mileage is still fine too (28.6 mpg highway). I also stuck a 180 degree thermostat in it about a month ago, but I've never read anything about them causing these kinds of problems.

Could this be a vacuum leak or something like that? If it were a fuel injection problem, it would screw up at any range and do it continuously, right?

Any ideas of where else to look would be appreciated.

I know the post is old, but its still here!  lol

yes, a fuel inj. problem would most likely be noticed all the time.

Not vacuum anything - idle is the first thing to go up when a vacuum leak is present.

Any engine codes?

does it chug from cold to hot and all through?

One more thing - higher loads come from higher gears.  Top gear is where most loads occur.  Flooring the car when shifting into second gear is much less stressful than flooring a car in top gear at high speed.
