1995 Beretta 6-cyl Steering - ASAP - PLEASE
1995 Beretta 6-cyl Steering - ASAP - PLEASE
Backing out of a parking spot, while the wheel was turned, I heard a thump, then the squealing of the belt.. stopped the car and could tell something was leaking but not what cause it was raining, but I kinda knew.. confirmed the next day it was in fact the power steering fluid - ALL of it was gone, belt was probably squealing from being wet from fluid spraying out, was coming out pretty quick that I could tell. It was about 20 min ride, and still had power steering (not sure any fluid was left though) upon arrival, though very noisy.
I've heard this car has issues with the power steering hoses.. Hopefully, nothing else was ruined.. can anyone PLEASE put up pics so I can see what I'm doing to check, PLEASE? I'm no mechanic, do know a little bit, and do pick up things fast.. simply can't afford major repairs right now..
Also, will any special tools besides standard sockets/screwdrivers/wrenches be needed?
Please advise ASAP, ASAP! PLEASE.
Thank you.

ok.. i found that it is a leaky hose.. it's the hose that starts as a hard metal tube from under where you check the power steering fluid, the attaches to a fat rubber tube that disappears down behind the break cylinder..
Can Someone Please Tell me WHICH hose this is so I can get an accurate price estimate? Dont want to drive it without fluid too far..
PLEASE? ASAP??
ill try to upload a pic later, but in the meantime if it sounds like you know which one it is, please let me know..
thanks very much..

Yup, it runs from the pump to the steering rack, and it sprays everywhere when it blows. While you're servicing the power steering system, you should check the cooler line that goes underneath the car on the passenger side. They tend to leak slowly over time and you may want to replace it too.

Thank you.
I was looking on Pep Boys Auto for the part, but wasn't sure which hose.. could someone please direct which is the proper one? Couldn't see the bottom attachment too well. Library has a Chilton, but can't get a ride for a couple of days.
Also, the cooler line under the car on the passenger side, is that an antifreeze line? The car has has a very slow coolant leak that no one can seem to find, though it has a lot of mileage, about 245k.
The steering is priority, but if i could also ask one other thing (sure i will have more later if I can keep it), but a while ago, they forgot to put a sticker up with the oil change, and it went well over due. Then it started clanking. Seemed to go down as the car warmed up. Changed the oil a couple of times, and as the weather got warmer it died out. Also has intermittent minor stutter, you can't hear it much but can see it in the tailpipe mist. Been told it's the lifters and will lose the engine when it gets cooler again...??
Thanks very much..

p.s.
The steering issue is still priority, but to add to the other just in case you might have an idea about that too:
the sputter coincides with intermit. rough idle, and many times (not always) when starting, I step on the gas and it won't respond good at all at first, then give it more gas, then it responds, but once in a rare while will stall.. starts up again.. just got a new fuel pump.. they backwashed some kind of special cleaner for the injectors into the fuel line.. been an issue for a long time...
thanks again..

It is the HIGH PRESSURE line, that's all you need to know. Walk in to your auto parts store and say I need the high pressure power steering line. (typically one without the sensor if they ask)
The cooler line Woody speaks of, is the return line from the PS pump, it goes down to a metal loop under the passenger side rocker, you should check the two connections to that metal loop since they are only clamps on a rubber hose, the tend to leak or blow off. After that loop the line comes back up and is the rubber return line that goes into the PS tank.

can you please tell me if any special tools would be needed to change that hose? if you can give me a brief descrip that'd be great too (haven't seen the ends of it yet, don't know how hard this will be..)
please let me know, need to see if i can do this myself - i hope, i hope..

ASAP
Please Help?
I know someone said its the high pressure hose, can you confirm: The guy from the parts store told me on the phone that it's the "steering pressure hose to gear w/o alt cool duct"....??
Again, the leak is in the line that starts as metal tube attached to bottom of power steering fluid holder, runs up over the top to drivers side coupled to a big rubber tube approx 1 1/2"?, and back down (under master cyl?), where it couples back to a very, very short metal tube into a box with 3 other small metal tubes.
I've been stranded almost 2 weeks with no help and getting desperate.
PLEASE HELP so I can try to see if I can do this myself. Been out of work from injuries, so paying mechanic for labor would mean not paying rent because of a $30 hose.
It has become and URGENT matter, can't even get to pick up meds or rent, and there's no one around to assist.
If anyone has any additional info that might help me to see if I can get this done. When looking at it, it seems to be all one piece, the rubber hose and metal lines at the ends. So the biggest problem seems to be I can't get to the metal end under the power steering fluid holder. Can't even tell if I need any special tools.
Does anyone have any instructions or illustrations, maybe a copy of a Chilton or Haynes or other repair book to share PLEASE??
pLEASE?
ASAP?
[Edit: Chilton or Haynes or Other Repair Manual - didn't mean the whole book, just the pages for the steering - please]

There are two parts of the line... If you went to an auto parts store and asked to see these then MAYBE you would be able to figure this out. This is not hard.
Do you have a cooling duct going to the back of your alternator? Being a 95 I doubt it so this is the METAL LINE you need from the PS pump to the rubber line. EDELMANN Part # 80224

Now if thats not the side thats leaking and its the rubber line to the rack then you need this. EDELMANN Part # 71780

I got this ALL from rock auto WITH pictures so you can see what the item is.
Only special tool you may need is an 18mm Crows foot to get the line off the rack. Going through the drivers side wheel well its a tight fit and you can't get a wrench in there easily.
