Speedometer workds intermittently

While driving down the freeway at 65 mph cruise control on, the cruise suddenly shut off and the speedometer dropped to "O". When I pulled of the freeway the engine wouldn't idle smoothly and I had to keep it reved up to keep running. It did clear itself after sitting about 6 hours, But after 12 blocks of driving did it again. Any ideas. Thanks.
