i think i need to replaced the tps on my car. My question is this: Are there special tools needed to do it? i've read that one should take it to a mechanic because of the tools needed to set the correct rpms on this thing. Is this true? i've replaced the tps and egr myself but i never took the car to a shop to have them scan these parts. What should i do?

You don't need any "special" tools to replace a TPS. Just remember to properly "load" it when you install it. Very easy job. GL.

What do you mean by "properly load"??  The TPS is spring loaded to go to the closed position when there is no "load" on it(throttle is not depressed). You only need a torx bit to remove the screws, pull it out, put the new one back in. I'm sorry i didn't explained myself properly lol. I've replaced the sensor already, i was wondering if after it's replaced one needs to have it scanned for it to work properly. I've read in the manual that it needs to be set with a scanning tool as well as the egr.

John, some cars require a small preload upon installation of the TPS. For instance our Sable did as do most Taurus's. You preload it to set the RPM's. Yea, I really do know *** I'm talking about..... I've replaced one or two (thousand) of these. I DID look it up however, and it seems the 3.1L in the Beretta's don't require it.
No, you don't need your car scanned. If you still have a SES or Check Engine light on, remove the negative cable for 30-60 minutes to reset the codes.

For sure no, I have done it on my 3.1 and 3100 and never had to scan it. Yes, I have only done two of them.
