Placeholder topic for weba's future engine project
It will be refreshed engine for my daily driver, so not planning anything spectacular. Also not going to use too much €€€ for it.


I recently got the shipment of engine parts pulled back in 2008 summer @ Chicago.

Should have the following:
- 1999 3400 UIM with no text
- 2000 3400 LIM
- 99-00? 3400 heads
- 99-00? 3400 valve covers
- 99-00? 3400 timing cover, water pump, power steering pump
- 3100 t/b
- 3400 t/b
- 3400 SS header flanges
- Misc hoses, braces and tubes

If you can identify the part year, 99 or 00, let me know...

Also lost somewhere on the process were, maybe i can get em later:
- 3500 UIM
- Fuel rail
- Fuel injectors
- 1995 Beretta throttle cable

What i also need to get or do:
- UIM to LIM bolt set
- Get the EGR port cut off and welded shut.
- Either make header utilizing the flanges or use the 3.1 exhaust manifolds.
- Verify Can i use stock bolts on UIM and timing cover? Since i don't have the 3400 bolts here.
- If i get the 3500 UIM, throttle body adapter plate?
- Something else?, input needed



For this project i am also going to utilize the Powermax 2030 cam and golden 1:5 rockers bought years ago.
I know the cam is not that big, but i really need to pass emission test on my daily driven car, so it's good enough, couple steps better than the 19 year old stock one.

Shopping list for new parts:
- ARP head bolts
- Gasket sets
- Oil pump
- Custom pushrods
- Cam bearings
- Your input here

I would like to get donor short block that i could get honed, rings, bearings and all that, but in case i can't find one, i am just going to use the current one, most likely as it is for time limitations.

I'm open for input, so let me know if you have any recommendations..

This project is on HOLD until i can find someone to ship me that replacement transmission, it's #1 on the list of stuff i need. The guy who was supposed to pull it for me, has disappeared

The upper has 00 on it, check to be sure that it doesn't have that wall in it like the 99's(just after the EGR port inside). I thought that the all the blank uppers had that. Very bad for flow.
I have read that alumnum rockers don't last more than 30K and I think that you can use the 1.6 magnum steel rockers. I swear that I read on Comp Cam site that they had to be self align. I've been told that they don't.
I really think that you should use the 3100 big port heads and not the 3400(that's just me though).
Swap the 3100 throttle shaft into the 3400 TB and you can use that 95 3100 linkage. I think you can swap cruise cables and keep your stock control box. I got one off of a 3400 when I thought that I needed it to use the 3400 TB on my car. It looked like it could be an easy swap.

Try to pick up the PCV tubes. It would be a pain to try and make a custom set up.

that 00 is actually stamped on the LOWER intake.

the blank UIM is the one that was used on the early 3400 equipped mini-vans

what size injectors are you looking for. i got some stock 3400 injectors which are the same design/style that came on the 96-99 3400's. let me know what you need. might have a fuel rail around too not sure about that one but i definitely got a pile of injectors.

If I can get the 3500 UIM, I may use it, but I think this no-text 3400 UIM is better looking, and does not need t\b adapter...And do I really need all that flow with my 3.1 bottom end?
Also, can that "wall" be ported out? Do you have any picture of what I should be looking at?

And what is the difference between these and 3100bp heads? I thought they are the same?

Why would the aluminum rockers die that fast? If they do, why is Crane advertising those as "the best" they offer, doesn't sound right.

As for PCV tubes and else, I can't get any of those here since 0 of cars with 3400 were ever sold in this country. So I try to use as much of the parts I currently have here and make rest out of something.

99GaGT3X00, Not sure of what injectors I should be running, I need to read more about that first. Most likely 3400 ones should be ok.

Ben told me there was no point in trying to take the wall out. It is better just to get a 2000 upper. But I'm sure that you can try if you want.

On the rockers they are made for race engines that are torn down after a season or two.
Chamber size is what I was thinking about on the heads. The 3400 has a bigger bore, but many have run them with no problems of galvanic expansion(top of the cylinder getting ate up).
The PCV system is very common here so feel free to post a WTB here. I don't think shipping would be that bad on something less than a pound in weight.

Weba, superdave was telling me that using the headgaskets of a Third Gen Camaro 3.1v6 will raise the compression ratio to the correct level for using 3.4 heads.

Money pit Beretta, thanks for the link, that explains what to look for. I guess i have to either cut that thing open or get another UIM then.

As for bore difference, never remember anyone having issues, oh well, i am Not going to get another set of heads after all this trouble

Now.. is there any difference between 99 and 00 HEADS in 3400 engines?

I think I'm going with the golden rockers anyway and then inspect them for a wear sometimes.

hey weba i have set injectors from 99 with fuel rail and i also have 3400 uim from 2000+ car ill let it all go for 60 plus shipping if your interested its just stuff sittin in my garage

Hmmh i need to double check my cam card, do the 3400 valve springs fill the requirements...

If you are thinking of using self aligning rockers on the 660 well you cant. The ears will contact the spring retainer and ruin the parts. There is not enough valve stem tip sticking out past the retainer.

Thanks. Long read, but good info.

2000+ 3100 and all 3400 heads are identical. They all have the same combustion chamber 1994-2005. The only difference is the better casting quality and the 1.76" intake vs 1.72". You cannot port that wall out, unless you weld the upper first and then grind. Not worth it, just run it. That cam is small and you aren't going to notice a difference between uppers with a near stock build. ARP head studs are not going to be necessary but they are reusable so that would be the only good reason to get them. You will probably need stiffer springs but who knows. They are pretty weak.
