coolant level sensor change?

My coolant level sensor has gone bad and I had to unplug it to get that stupid light to shut off. The pig tail had coolant on it too. How the hell do you get the sensor out?

Pull. Maybe give it a twist. Nothing special holding it in other than an oring.

Kinda surprising too since it does technically see close to 15PSI at some times.

For better or worse... the last one I changed didn't seem to fit as tight so I gave it some super glue help.

99% of the time the float is just stuck.. a few taps on the side of the reservoir with a screwdriver handle or the like will take care of it.

Ok I'll try it. Anything to avoid having to drain the overflow tank. I hate working on the cooling system. My drain plug is stuck.
And the level sensor was working before I changed the temp sensor.

If you have a later model, ie 92+, the sensor is pushed into the bottom of the tank, just unbolt the tank, flip it forward, grab the tab where the sensor is, and pull. it does not contact any coolant. Makes me wonder how it works lol

WHAT?? really... Thats news to me. I thought it was floating in the coolant for all the pressurized tanks.

Nope, flip your tank over and you will see, it just pops out when you grab it with needle nose pliers. No fluid touches it, im still trying to figure out how the hell it works

I figured it out! I had to take the tank out of the red car for will to use and I figured out what the sensor is. Its just like every other sensor on these cars, Its magnetic... there is a plastic float that has a magnetic slug in it and when thats next to the sensor the light goes on... when it's floating its away from it. I heard it rattling around and shined a flashlight at the base of the tank and could see the part slide up and down that chamber next to the sensor.

Nice, now I know the why and how. I will tap on it this weekend, but I think it is leaking. Could it slide down?

it shouldn't ever leak, as Geoff said its independent from the coolant, hence why there is a floater magnet inside the tank.
Take the tank out and clean it out good, it should rattle like a PCV valve then you know its good... LOL

Ok I'll check it.
Don't know why there was coolant on the pig tail. Right on the wires and soaked.

the small hoses just above that could have been leaking some... or possibly the tank is cracked.
