I found a good deal on a 3400 from an alero but it is a 5 speed. I have a 91 GT with a 3.1 auto. Can I use that engine even though it is a manual and I have an auto. I will only swap if I can keep the auto.

It shouldn't be a 5 speed unless someone swapped it into the Alero.

But yes, the 3.1 and the 3400 share the same bellhousing pattern. If it does come from a car that had a 5 speed - put the flexplate off of your 3.1 onto the 3400.

Nobody ever said you had to swap in a 5 speed to swap to a 3400. It just makes the car faster and more fun too.

x2 our trannies will bolt on to a 2.8, 3.1, 3100, 3400 and 3500. The only problem you will have is getting that trans of yours to handle the 50 some extra horses. It may need to be rebuilt to handle the power or it will blow soon. 5-speed FTW

Hey rephrase that statement now... I think you mean Quicker and more fun depending on what you find fun... Two fastest guys use Autos, or at least Rodney is switching BACK to an auto

Uhhhhhhh how do you have fun with a auto? Drag racing is okay but there's plenty of other more exciting motor sports

I have both, I have my 5-speed for daily driving, but I have my auto for the strip.

Just to add my .02 to this. Its been proven that an auto can always shift faster than anyone can a 5spd all day long. Any while you shift more on the strip, and auto shifts less and holds the power longer. It goes both ways, but the fastest cars in the world are running autos. I love my 5spd, but if i built a car for the strip, it would be an auto all the way.
