Need help ASAP No spark wont start.

Post by beretta »

My 88 base 3.1.....

Has never gave me problems ever to start. recently has had a very slight miss fire but always ran..

I OHM'd the injectors the other night and all were 13 ohms except 1.. it was 6.. so i replaced it with a used one that OHM'd at 13.

Ran great for 2 days. was running fine last light, parked it went to bed, got up this morning and wouldnt start no fire at all. i rolled it over until my battery died at least half an hour, red top is pretty good LOL....

Ended up driving to work with my friend who works with me but we were going to take my car today...

I had a coil pack from a 2.8 i know was running i took it off had it since winter time.. put that on when i just got home and still no spark... Has power to the coils. i dont know how to test the other wires to see if theres a spark signal...

I tryed 2 other ECM's i know worked before and ran it. still no spark....

What else to check ?? Crank sensor ?? will the crank sensor from a 3100 work ?? crank sensor is the one at the back of the engine with a single wire plug going to it ??? i wiggled wires all over, checked all fuses.. like i said its been running great never ever once gave me a hard time to start, always started right up every time and randomly just wont start now...

Need help ASAP i need to drive to work tomorrow..

Crank sensor has 2 wires. Its either a crank sensor or ICM issue. Or possibly a wire broken in between.

i cant see it being a wire.. never had any issues before, first time it has never started.. no warning of any kind just wouldnt start when i went out to start it to warm up this morning..

ICM ?? that the coils bolt to ??? i just changed it with one i know was working came from a running car that was driven daily until the body fell apart.... i have wiggled every dam wire still no diference...

The Crank sensor is at the rear of the block ??? whats at the front ? oil pressure sensor ?... i can only feel and see 1 wire leading to the sensor at the back of the block i thought was the crank sensor.... maybe a wire broke and is missing lol. i dont know, ran great no signs of anything just wont start...

Its not a fuel issue... the pump was new last summer i can hear it coming on, has fuel at the rail, i can smell gas, plugs are dry.. i stuck a plug on the wire and had my gf roll it over a million times and nothing at all for spark

Thats the knock sensor you are feeling I think. The crank sensor is below that. If you car is automatic its a PITA to change

5 speed... excuse my language BUT gently caress ME................. ive checked everything but the crank sensor. the scanner suspects the sensor by the trouble shooting tips i walked through all of them and even changed to another ICM ..

I found the sensor.... tryed to pry it out and it FUCKING snapped off and broke flush.. tryed with a small screw driver to wiggle it to come out and just keeps breaking off now i cant even see it anymore...

Draining my oil now droped the starter got all the oil pan bolts out bout to drop it now and see if i cant push that stupid sensor out. i got home from work like 8 PM been outside the whole time. its not 10:50 PM and im not even half frigen done and i need to drive to work tomorrow. This thing is really errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrking me.............

Ok so got it out, pan is back up with a few bolts for the night. going to pick up a new crank sensor tomorrow. i cant believe how difficult they are to get out, i thought well it should just wiggle out.. HAHAHA ya right, i know i will grease the crap out of the new one when it goes in.. Hopefully thats all of my problem..

It has not given me any trouble at all before other then a slight miss fire thats barley noticeable and i ohm'd the injectors a couple days ago and one was 6 ohms all the rest and the replacement was 13.

It just randomly would not start. i almost cryed when it wouldnt start my pour baby let me down for its first time. I have noticed though it didnt seam to have as much power as before but still hauled butt.. maybe the sensor has been slowly dying with out any sudden fits just instantly stops working.

You should count yourself lucky, at least it wasn't terminal. Compared to what it could have been, or the things that can happen, having a sensor/injector go bad is not really that terrible. Its "figuring out what the hell broke" that's the bitch.

yup well i had the entire car ripped apart tonight trying to figure it out, first i changed the coil pack and ICM, then the ECM. then a dif ecm, then my friend brought me his scanner and no codes at all, so i went into trouble shooting with it and says.. No spark injector pulse.. if no RPM while cranking then suspect ICM..... No spark No injector pulse with no rpm while cranking suspect Crank sensor.

Well im not sure if the injectors were pulsing or not i pulled out 1 plug and it was dry so i figured not.. and the scanner while in trouble shooting stuff shows RPM so you can see what its doing when you crank it..

I changed the ICM and coil packs with yet another one i had and still nothing so figured must me the sensor, or broken wire but i cant see a wire breaking when i havent been under it all all yanking on things.

I ended up having to drop the oil pan, had to remove the starter to get some bolts, then the shield on the trans, and looking at the end of the sensor its all cracked to heck and has some cracking up the sides of it, some could have been from me pushing it out but it pushed out fairly smoothly once i could get behind it.

And worst of it is i cant even drive it to my shop an hour away LOL, so i have it jacked up with a crapy jack cuz thats all i have at home, couple rims shoved under it in case is falls, and im laying under it and can barley move lol. what a pain in the Azz.

i would have just drove the Z but my 10 day sticker ran out sunday, and i need to call my insurance place and get insurance put on it, i got my etest and safety for it now so thats all set but my insurance needs a couple days to get paper work ready for me so that wasnt going to happen in 10 minutes so i could drive to work lol. my friends sticker ran out on the weekend as well but have to get there some how.

My friend who works with me was going to catch a ride with me today, normally we ride together but we go in his car, today he was gonna go with me and woulda been the first time hes been in the retta, and what happens, the dam thing wont start LOL, i blame it on him for jinxing it....

Ordering a new sensor first thing in the morning and will get it in tomorrow night and find out if its going to run or not..

I need to get my turbo engine soon and just build it up. i found 3 small very small pieces of aluminum on the oil pump screen, not sure what its from, maybe a piston from reving the crap out of it, i have been a little easier on it lately though. im sure its nothing drastic i have seen alot worse. and theres nothing in my oil so i dunno, could have been there for 20 years who knows. the pans probably never been off it before and thankfully its a 1 piece rubber seal so it shouldnt leak since i pulled it off.

Crank sensors, old ones at least, are a pain to get out. The plastic gets brittle over time/heat cycles, and that's why it's a pain to get out.

Sounds like that's the culprit though, so at least you figured out the problem!

I got the new crank sensor today, list price was 58.00 or something, i paid 38.00

It seems to be 1/4 inch longer.. i had them pull up one for a 2.8 beretta. and 3.1 cavy and they all list the same part number.. when i put mine beside it were the oil seal is together, the new one is longer.. so im going to have to drop the pan off to see how far its going to go in if it sits flush on the outside or not.. Maybe its been changed before and wasnt the right one who knows.

The engine is from a 91 cavy and motor had been changed in the car before, the ICM had been changed unless GM writes stuff on them with yellow marker paint ..

I got the sensor from Napa Auto parts.. ECHLIN is the name on the box. CSS109

Slight updates. The function design is the same until the 3500/3900 came out.

It fits, just got it back together and fresh oil and filter and first touch of the key she fired up..

I did find some small pieces of aluminum or something in the bottom of the oil pan, not sure what the heck... it runs fine, no noises at all from the engine, i havent checked with a magnet yet but im sure its prob aluminum. oh well it runs... sounds good, about to go for a test drive.
