My 96 Build

This is a grouping of posts from 60* v6 on my 96 project since I somewhat killed my other thread on here... Granted alot of the text wont make sense, but it will give you a general idea of what I went through. Some stuff is also missing such as the NA runs I made in Niagara where I decided to ditch the Yank converter and go back to a 2050. I then swapped to the 3k PDQ one I found and am still running that today. I did that due to the brake upgrade. I also left out the large Trans carnage that happed immeditely after I swapped in the LSD due to me forgetting a spacer and it allow the parts to move.

So yes this is alot of what I've done, but not all of it. :) I'm keeping this seperate from my other topic unless Will has a way to put all of these posts in the FRONT of my other topic.

Happy reading

It consists of removing a stock 96 3100 from a Rust free 96 beretta base, putting that motor in my red 95 and then taking my Hybrid and putting a larger cam in it, with better springs, some more port work, and possibly a 3500 upper plenum and then droping that in the 96. Also the 96 trans will get rebuilt, with all my normal tweaks I did to the 94 I currently drive, along with a Yank Performance 3k stall converter. Gear ratio will be the 1.12:1 chain combo to underdrive the trans, and then the 3.05 diff with the EP LSD, resulting in a 3.42 FDR... Little more agressive than my 3.33 but still conservative in comparison to a 3.73

Other toys in store for this car is brand new KYB's and Eibach springs, modified J-body poly front control arm bushings Z26 rear axle with internal sway bar and 26mm external addco piggie backed.. I'm gonna test this with the stock front to see if it has a tad more over steer rather than pushing... Also its getting N-body knuckles, bearings, outer CV's and brake setup... I may jump to the F-body stuff but not right away.

Now the car itself is getting a Z26 Body kit treatment, since its a Base, and will also be getting a fresh coat if its FACTORY color... The reason I'm keeping it factory is because its a Rare color for the year, Only 1,455 produced so I'll keep that aspect of it. It will also be getting my Walbro fuel pump, gauge pillar and gauges, full cluster, Z26 seats if all works out, And the blue nitrous bottle in the trunk. Stereo will stay stock since I want the tunes in my Daily Driver over this car, since it will be a toy.

Here are some pics of the car and parts piles I got going on already. ;)

My Project.

Yeah one pic is in the sig... but here are some others.

Image

Image

Now the plans for this car still in the works is, N-Body Knuckles, calipers, rotors, to make my brakes a little bigger and open the option of upgrading to Vette stuff if I want later.

Engine work includes taking the hybrid from my 95 and putting a new cam in it, Much bigger one, some more port work, new valve springs and depending on if I'm crazy I may shave the heads... I doubt it though. Current setup with the cam swap alone benched 285 crank HP, so thats not bad numbers to start with, and then add a 100 shot of juice on top of it ;)

Trans will be the 96 4t60e thats in there with a full rebuild, valve body valves replaced with coated ones, home made shift kit, Gill Younger shift correction kit, EP LSD, and a 3.42 FDR.

I'm gonna need the tuner to make this thing run...

Oh yeah its gonna get painted too, not sure how quick that will happen but I think I'm gonna keep the whole thing the original Raspberry color. Just to piss people off at the strip when I beat them with a pink Beretta... LOL

Sealed that motor up and now time to swap it into OLE RED...
Image

I did the full engine swap in 5 hours after going to work and back with the car... The motor was still warm when I was pulling it out... LOL
3:30, just got a nice healthy drink of MM Oil, to oil up the top end and keep it fresh once its out.

After the 3100 went in I noticed it was a DOG and so was the Hybrid before I pulled it(I thought there were other issues with it), so all signes pointed to the one and ONLY thing that was in common between the two motors... The exhaust... Well the CAT to be more specific.

Pics
Bits and pieces, this is the front inlet side.
Image

and this is the back... you can see the other stuff breaking up clogged everything else that was left.
Image

So I go for a ride to warm up the oil before I change it and well its NOT snowing at ALL when I leave, ends up being white out conditions and takes me 30 min to get home. I had to drive with no headlights on so I could see the road.

Now my car looks like this :D

I got the bump stick with the new cam bearings.

Comparison, WOT-Tech custom grind on left, Milzy stage 1 in middle and Stock on right. You can see the duration difference AND you can see how much material was removed from the base circle to add the lift...

Cam specs,
.050 duration 216/240
Valve lift .517/.568
112LSA 108IC

And Now I had to change from LS6 springs to Comp Cam springs to support the lift.
Nevermind got lift... Got space for lift???

Comp springs and LS6 springs side by side... WAY more room for lift with the comps...
Image

568 lift on a LS6 spring with the lifter colapsing... LOL

Installing the new comp springs.

Well if anyone besides Shane is reading this, the drive line will be going in tonight. Work will start around 5, I have to crack open the trans one more time since I forgot to put in one oil weir, nothing major but may save something some day ;) And then the frame rails will get dropped and the trans put in place.

Honestly this is the most complete motor I have ever dropped into a car... The only things that still need to be bolted to it is the starter, AC, PS pump, and the headers, and connect it to the trans obviously... But typically half the top end is off of what I'm dropping in and there are no coolant bypass lines hooked up and such. So this install should go rather speedy... I'm hoping =D

I'll have pictures tonight of the progress.

Well i did a little work.

Dropped frame rails, cut off exhaust, replaced inner tierod bushings... Yes I do use my own products ;)

and then installed the transmission.

PICS...

Since I forgot to get a Belt, I can't really install the motor since the side motor mount would be in the way later, so yeah that will wait till tomorrow. I'll just go get the other fluids I need for tomorrow now.
