HELP! Quad4 going dead, then coming back up

Hey guys...I just picked up my 1990 Beretta GTZ w/ the Quad4 and the 5speed manual two days ago...I got a killer deal on it, but it needs some things worked out. My MAJOR concern right now is that if I'm driving at PART THROTTLE it'll act as if it just stalled...lose ALL power, then suddenly come back up again...it's like doing a neutral drop while you're driving....I feel bad for the poor thing It will NOT do this at full-throttle.

I'm thinking either cap/rotor/wires (friend's Mustang did the same thing and it was wires), OR the TPS....suggestions? ideas? experiences? thanks a lot

Your car does not have an old fashion setup with a distributor.
I dont know what to tell you on your problem.  I would guess throttle problem too.

TPS sounds like a good place to start. Test it with a multi meter or however the repair books say to.

IDIS I believe is the correct term.  The unit bolted under the ID cover is the "Coil" .

thanks dude...is either the IDIS or my wires likely to be responsible for my troubles?

It can be a vacuum leak also.
Try giving it gas while in neutral.  Does it "stall" out still?

Could be.  You'd more likely get a "miss" or shatty performance.

check everything under the IDI cover. I bet its coils, housing, plugs, plug boot, ignition module related.

thanks guys...lots of good advice here

it seems to be PERFECT in neutral...also..definitely no missing or lagging performance...at wide open throttle the thing HAULS ***....the only time it really does this is at part throttle, low RPM (ie: cruising around town in 3rd/4th)....

Good luck finding spark plug wires on it too.....

Your in for a little learning experience.  If you ever wanted to learn how bad the quick lube places lie to all the customers about how they need this part or that part, you have the car that allows you to bust them.  Just wait till they say you need a new cap, rotor and wires.  I used to get a big kick out of that.  Then I'd ask if they could show me which parts I needed to replace.  Some knew they had been had, some other were too dumb and would actually try to find that stuff on the engine.

hahahaha I NEVER let anyone do anything on my vehicles....only thing that's ever been done to the truck by someone else has been machining work

And I'm hopefully going to have some time this Saturday/Sunday to pop the hood and goof around underneath and get familiar with things...definitely a change from the usual pushrod, coil/wire/cap/plugs setup I'm used to....I work 2 jobs and go to school full-time so I literally haven't had time to pop the hood yet hahaha
