Requirements?

LOTS of elbow grease. Lots of sandpaper. Start with course paper and work your way to fine grit paper. Some have started with 80 grit. You will want to end up at like 1000 or 1500 grit for the final sanding, but you are best to use at least 4 sizes, working each round thorougly.

It takes serious time and effort. Most of the people that have done theirs have taken literally days worth of work.

Once you got the sanding out of the way, you can finally polish it. If you have access to a DA, that will help some of the sanding and the polish work as you can buy polish wheels for them.

As for write ups, I don't know of any.

With tools. You can do the same by hand but it takes much longer

If you don't keep up with it, it will look like crap over time. It's a lot of upkeep.

I'm not going to be doing it again, that's for sure.

Polished aluminum is the bane of my existence. I prefer aluminium paint.

Sandpaper.

Also you could get it powder coated, that fills lots of small voids. You still need to get it pretty smooth before powder tho

You want it a bit rough so paint can stick; otherwise it will peel up.
