1990 Beretta GTZ 2.3 quad four/ tranny help!

Hi, new to the forums...I have a really confusing problem to ask about.
I bought a 1990 GTZ with quad four. I have gone through 5 shift selector gear cables(shift cables) in 2 months....I have no clue why this is happening. No, I am not fast and furious drivingf, I am seriously babying my driving style. it's still binding right by the gear shift. I have put this cable in so many times, I dont even need to jack the vehicle anymore.
So my VIN# is 1G1LZ14A4LY138151
Now, when I went to the tranny shop back home (Big Rapids Michigan), they ran the chevy dealers computer system to find out what kind of cable I needed...they said it was an izuzu...part number 16654 on advanceautoparts.com
now, that is the cable I have continuously put back into the car when breaking.
So people have told me I have an izuzu tranny because of the last 6 numbers in my Vin code...138151, if that number is 500001 and up it's a getrag, if lower, its izuzu...since mine is lower, its izuzu
BUT,
If it really is an izuzu would it keep breaking? my question is I have NO idea if this car's tranny was swapped out by the previous owners, I think I am the third owner, engines been rebuilt 3 times now.
I dont want to sell it, but school is coming up in less than 4 weeks and I have to have a drivable car....
can someone tell me HOW I can tell what kind of tranny this is, other possible causes of the cable constantly binding and how much a used tranny would cost, or how much to rebuild mine or what I can do to fix this.
I am becoming extremely depressed about this, I have no clue what to do anymore.
This site http://www.drivetrain.com/ shows that beretta's of my year and engine type have the Muncie 282 (MG2) tranny when you search for transmissions and click the *find the tranny that fits your vehicle link*
but I dont see any other shift selectory cables I can buy, and when I call autozone/ Napa and advance, they only carry the part #'d 16654 motormite cable that keeps binding. what a, I supposed to do?
any help at all would be extremely helpful!
I've had this car for 2 months and it's killing me that I'd had this bad of a problem.
