which would you guys recommend to get rid of paint that is about to chip away. i have tried to sand it and feather it out to no avail. my father in law suggested stripping those spots to the metal, feather them out, then prime. these little chips are rampant and are becoming a pain to get rid of.

i have been using a fiberglass wheel, like a wire wheel, goes right onto a drill, made by 3m i think, sponsored by nascar.

it works great, takes off lots of meat, but doesnt do much to the solid metal. about $10 for the double wide one at walmart or major parts stores.

this is what i was thinking about getting but my FIL swears by the strip stuff. he said it would leave a smoother surface. i have lots of tiny "cross hatch' looking scratches that are shallow in the paint but still wont fill in or sand away.

Yes, the chemical strippers will leave a smoother finish and take away practically no metal.. They always do. Trick with any sanding marks, is to get the right amount of primer (and type) on the surface, and properly sand it so its perfectly smooth. Some have even used ultra fine sanding on the metal a bit first before priming. There are always going to be cheap ways and best ways, lets leave it at that.

I am a big fan of the aircraft remover. It works well on factory or professional type paint...not so well on spray cans. It reacts with the air and gets really hot and thats what peels the paint off. doesnt touch the metal. I've even used it on fiberglass grills etc and it works fine too just dont let it sit long on the glass just as a precaution.

aircraft remover. those wheels leave gouges in the metal and with the stripper leaving solid metal, you dont need to fill the hell out of it and worry about any scratches coming through. the only time i use a wheel type stripper is if im using filler on that area
